"Henry..." Sophia Lane began, standing in the center of the living room. Her words, though quiet, landed like a thunderclap. "I'm pregnant." I had just returned from abroad. The ink was barely dry on a 300-million-dollar deal, my suit still crisp from the journey. "What?" I managed, my mind scrambling. "When did you... Why didn't you tell me sooner?" A reflexive urge to close the distance between us, to hold her, propelled me from my chair. "Don't." She took a step back, her movement sharp and final. I stopped, confusion giving way to a cold prickle of dread. Her eyes were teary, her lip caught firmly between her teeth. "The baby... it's not yours." For a moment, time seemed to freeze. "Say that again," I demanded, my voice dangerously low. "It's Alex Johnson. My old college boyfriend. My first love. He's back in the country, and we... we made a mistake," she whispered, the confession tumbling out in a rush of tears. A hollow laugh escaped me, devoid of any warmth. "So you tell me this now? What exactly am I supposed to do with this information, Sophia?" She looked up, her gaze tentative, searching my face. "The engagement announcements have gone out. Everyone knows we're getting married." She drew a shaky breath, her proposal hanging in the charged silence. "Perhaps... you could marry my sister instead. Then we could still... stay a family."
