Chapter 4
The asset review went even smoother than I'd expected. Mr. Mason really was the best in the business. In less than half a day, he had laid out every expense from the last three years in perfect detail.
Looking at that long string of numbers, I let out a cold laugh.
In the last three years, I'd poured nearly 1.7 million dollars into him. From the Patek Philippe on his wrist, to the Porsche he drove, to even the rent on the apartment he was living in now, I had paid for all of it.
And what did I get in return? Him running out on me in public at our wedding.
"At noon, Lucy sent me a screenshot. It was a post from Emily's social media feed. In the photo, Emily was wearing an oversized hospital gown, leaning against Alex's shoulder, pale-faced but smiling like she'd won.
"
"The caption read: [No matter when it is, the second I need you, you're always by my side. So grateful for you.]
"
And Alex had replied beneath it: [Silly girl, you're more important than anything.]
"I looked at the screenshot and felt absolutely nothing.
"
"Alex probably thought I was just throwing a fit. He probably thought that if he coaxed me a little, I'd forgive him like I always had before, and that the Lane family would never really drive him into a corner.
"
Too bad for him, he was wrong.
"At two in the afternoon, I took Mr. Mason and marched straight to Alex's company.
"
That company had originally been a no-name little business. It was only because I used the Lane family's connections to bring them several major deals that they came back from the dead. That was how Alex ended up in the Sales Director position.
"When I walked through the company's front doors, the young woman at reception nearly jumped, “Miss Lane, what brings you here?”
"
"I ignored her and headed straight for the general manager's office.
"
"Along the way, employees kept glancing over and whispering to each other.
They obviously already knew what had happened at the wedding."
I pushed open the general manager's office door.
He was sitting behind his desk, but the second he saw me, he sprang up with a smile plastered all over his face. “Miss Lane, what a surprise. What brings you here?”
I sat down on the couch while Mr. Mason stood behind me and handed him a document, “Mr. Williams, I came here today to take back what's mine.”
Mr. Williams froze for a second. He took the file, glanced at it, and his face changed instantly, “Miss Lane, what... what does this mean?”
“Exactly what it says.” I looked at him coldly. “Over the last three years, I brought your company seven major clients. They account for 80 percent of your profits. Now I'm taking every one of those clients back.”
He panicked. Cold sweat started beading on his forehead. “Miss Lane, let's talk this through. What Alex did was disgusting, I know. I've already chewed him out for it. But you can't cut off our whole company because of him. You'll destroy us!”
I stood up and looked down at him, “Mr. Williams, you've got one thing wrong. I'm not discussing this with you. I'm informing you.
"Alex only got where he is today because I was his fiancée. Now that we have nothing to do with each other, he has no right to keep enjoying my resources.”
Just then, the office door was shoved open hard. Alex rushed in, out of breath.
The second he saw me, his eyes lit up and he immediately ran over, reaching for my hand. “Vicky. You finally agreed to see me. I knew you couldn't really be that heartless!”
I pulled back in disgust, and Mr. Mason stepped forward at once to block him.
Alex froze. Then he noticed the file in Mr. Williams's hand, and his face changed instantly. “Vicky, what are you doing? You're taking all the clients away? Are you insane?”
Looking at that selfish face of his made me sick. “I'm not insane. I'm just taking back what belongs to me. Alex, who the hell do you think you are? Without me, you wouldn't even be able to keep this job.”
His face went green, then white. He gritted his teeth and tried to guilt-trip me. “Vicky, when did you become this cold-blooded? Emily was a patient. Was I wrong to save her? Why do you have to go after a sick woman like this?”
I let out a cold laugh, pulled a document from my bag, and flung it right at his face. “A patient? Then take a good look at this medical report.”
Alex fumbled to catch the papers. The moment he saw what was on them, he went completely rigid.
