Chapter 2
The next morning, when James came home, I had just received the divorce agreement.
I was in the kitchen, preparing breakfast. He walked over and wrapped his arms around me from behind.
There were faint dark circles under his eyes, but he was smiling.
"Every time I stay out all night, you bring up divorce," he said. "Why aren't you arguing with me this time?"
I quietly pushed him away. Then I served myself breakfast and started eating.
His expression changed slightly. He frowned.
"What about mine?"
All these years, no matter how late he stayed out or what he did, he would always come home, eat the breakfast I made, and then go to work.
I did not look up. "There's a housekeeper. There's food in the fridge."
A flicker of unease crossed his eyes. Just then, his phone rang again.
"James, I ordered breakfast. If you don't come soon, I'll eat it all myself."
He straightened and looked down at me, as if he had regained control.
"If I didn't feel sorry to leave you, who would want to eat this kind of food?"
I watched him turn and walk away again. I had seen that back countless times before. This time, it did not hurt as much.
After I signed the divorce agreement, I went straight to his company.
As soon as I walked in, I heard people whispering. "Who is she? She kind of looks like Amelia, just a bit older."
"Be quiet. If anything, Amelia looks like her."
I ignored them. I looked ahead and saw Amelia walking toward me, her face full of confidence.
She was supposed to be a secretary, but she was dressed as if she were on vacation.
"Ma'am, do you have an appointment?" she asked. "Mr. Foster's schedule is full today."
I chose not to make a scene. Instead, I called James.
"Don't forget what you promised me last night, Honey."
In less than three minutes, an assistant came to take me upstairs.
Amelia's face turned sour. She hurried after me, clearly upset.
"Let's exchange contact information," she said. "If you need anything in the future, you can come to me."
I looked at her, at the way she carried herself like the lady of the house. I let out a cold laugh.
"Sure."
James did not even look at me. He flipped open the contract and signed his name quickly.
Amelia rushed forward to stop him. "You should read it first," she said. "What if she secretly transfers your assets?"
James raised an eyebrow and looked at me, as if everything was under his control.
"She just wants money," he said. "It is marital property. Moving it around changes nothing."
I curled my lips into a faint smile. Then I turned and walked away.
I had not even reached the exit when two bodyguards stepped in from both sides and grabbed my arms.
"Mr. Foster wants you to go back," one of them said.
They were the same men who had forced me into the examination the night before. I struggled at once, but their grip tightened on my shoulders.
The pain was sharp, as if my bones might crack, but the fear of being humiliated was even worse.
When I was brought back inside, James looked tense. He was trying to calm Amelia, who kept saying she wanted to resign.
Suddenly, a heavy force pressed down on my shoulders. My knees gave way, and I fell hard onto the tile floor.
A glass flew past my temple and shattered beside me.
"Amelia only asked if you had an appointment," James said coldly. "And you called her a home wrecker in front of the whole company?"
"She comes from a good school and has a clean background. You may have no shame, but she does."
I suddenly laughed. Then I raised my head and looked at him without fear.
"Whether I said it or not, isn't it the truth?"
"If you care so much about dignity, then divorce me and marry her."
