Chapter 3
The storm had lasted until dawn.
So had Claire.
The storm kept us all awake until dawn.
From the guest room, Claire called Adrian whenever thunder shook the windows.
He brought warm milk and another blanket, then sat outside her door because she said she could not sleep alone.
I lay in our bedroom with one hand over my stomach.
The family brunch had been planned for weeks. I had placed our first ultrasound picture in a white box with a pair of baby socks. Adrian’s grandmother had waited years for another child in the family.
I had imagined opening the box myself.
But the spotting had not stopped.
At three in the morning, I sent Adrian a message.
*Please cancel the family brunch. The doctor said light bleeding could continue. She also said I need rest.*
He read it.
He did not answer.
When the rain weakened before sunrise, I heard him walk downstairs. For one foolish moment, I thought he was coming to check on me.
Instead, the coffee machine started.
Then came the quiet clink of plates in the dining room.
At seven, Adrian finally replied.
*The roads are clear. There is no reason to disrupt everyone’s plans.*
My health could not change his schedule.
Claire’s fear of thunder had changed his entire night.
I sent one more message.
*Do not touch the white gift box. I want to announce the pregnancy myself.*
This time, he answered immediately.
*Then come downstairs on time.*
I put my phone facedown. The ultrasound print and the tiny socks were already in the white box downstairs; I had set it on the dining room sideboard before my flight.
For weeks, I had imagined placing them in Adrian’s grandmother’s hands.
At nine, voices filled the house.
I pushed myself upright. Pain pulled across my abdomen, and dark spots swam across the room. I waited for them to clear before standing.
At nine-oh-two, Claire’s voice floated up the stairs.
"Adrian says we have something wonderful to tell everyone."
My hand froze on the bedroom door.
Adrian did not stop her.
I moved toward the stairs, one careful step at a time.
Below me, Claire stood at the head of my dining table. She had changed out of my mother’s robe. The pearl hair clip I had left on the guest-room dresser was fastened in her hair.
The white box rested beneath her hands.
"Olivia wanted this morning to be special," she said. "Since she isn’t feeling well, Adrian asked me to help."
Help.
The same word they used whenever she took something that belonged to me.
Claire lifted the lid.
By the time I reached the last stair, Adrian’s grandmother was holding my ultrasound photograph. Claire placed the tiny socks in her hands.
The old woman’s eyes filled with tears. She turned and embraced Claire.
Claire gave a startled laugh but did not step away.
"Thank you," She said brightly. "Adrian and I are just so thrilled to share this joy with everyone."
For one terrible second, the room looked complete without me, the room looked like a celebration for their child.
My husband stood beside his former fiancée. His family surrounded her. My baby’s first photograph was in their hands.
No one had noticed the child’s mother on the stairs.
Then Adrian saw me.
His eyes moved to the clock on the wall before they moved to my face.
"You are late," he said.
Something inside me became very still.
I walked straight toward Claire.
I was still in cotton pajamas. I held the stair rail until the dizziness passed, then crossed the room.
I took the photograph from his grandmother’s hands. Then I removed the baby socks from Claire’s fingers and placed both inside the box.
Claire’s smile trembled.
"I was only trying to save the moment."
"It wasn’t yours to save."
The room fell silent.
Adrian frowned deeply. He hated public drama. He hated losing control of his events.
"Calm down, Olivia," Adrian demanded. "The family was waiting for the surprise. Claire kept everyone comfortable while you stayed upstairs. Do not punish her for helping."
I looked at the untouched food, the flowers I had ordered, and the place cards written in my handwriting.
I had prepared the food and written every place card before leaving for my trip.
They had not needed Claire.
Adrian had chosen her.
"The brunch is over," I said.
Adrian's expression hardened. "Do not make a scene in front of my family."
I turned to the housekeeper.
"Please wrap the food for our guests and call their cars. "
Adrian’s grandmother looked from him to Claire. Her happiness faded into confusion.
One by one, our guests began collecting their coats.
It was the first time I had ended one of Adrian’s carefully arranged events.
Within two minutes, the large living room was completely empty.
It was just me, Adrian, and Claire.
His face hardened.
"You embarrassed Claire over something she did for us."
"I was bleeding upstairs. She announced my pregnancy downstairs."
"Because you made everyone wait again."
Thunder cracked above the house.
Then Claire’s breathing changed.
She gripped the edge of the table and started to breathe very fast.
"Adrian!" Claire gasped. "I cannot breathe..."
Adrian moved to her before the sentence was finished. He guided her into a chair and pressed her head toward his shoulder.
"Look at me," he told her. "You are safe."
I pressed a hand beneath my stomach.
Warmth spread between my legs.
"Adrian," I said. "I’m bleeding again."
He did not turn around.
"You were examined last night. The baby was fine."
I waited for him to look at me.
He kept rubbing circles across Claire’s back.
"Of course," I whispered.
Then I carried the white box upstairs alone.
Behind me, Adrian told Claire to breathe.
No one noticed the drop of blood I left on the pale carpet.
