Chapter 2
The ward, which had been noisy moments ago, fell silent at once.
Henry was still caressing Charlotte's cheek. The joy of becoming a father for the first time hadn't faded yet.
Hearing Sophia's words, Henry darkened his face as he strode over to her.
"Sophia, why are you here? And don't talk nonsense. Charlotte is the widow of my teacher," said Henry.
His teacher's widow?
Sophia turned her gaze to Charlotte.
Charlotte met her eyes and didn't know what to say.
Sophia sounded ironic. "Who would call his teacher's widow her first name?"
When Henry's teacher was seventy, he had an affair with a female student young enough to be his granddaughter.
Henry had even stood up for his teacher's first wife, but now he hooked up with the second one.
Sophia felt sick, like she was going to throw up.
Men really are all trash.
Sophia took a deep breath in disappointment.
"Henry, I want a divorce." Sophia's voice was icy.
Everyone else also heard it, and Henry's face darkened.
He was just about to speak when Charlotte got out of bed and grabbed Sophia's arm.
Charlotte explained, "Please don't misunderstand. Henry was just—"
"Let go!" Sophia barked.
Charlotte stumbled as Sophia shoved her hand away and fell on the ground.
A heavy thud came as Charlotte hit the floor. Her face drained of color.
Sophia was startled and bent down. "I'm so—"
Her words were cut off.
A strong force hit her from the side. Her wrist was gripped tightly, and she was thrown aside.
She staggered backward. The back of her head hit the corner of a metal cabinet.
Everything went black for seconds. When she could see again, Henry was holding Charlotte in his arms.
Sophia slumped against the wall. She reached up to her throbbing head, and her fingers were slick with blood.
When she looked up, she saw Henry's gaze blazing with fury.
"You lunatic! What were you thinking when throwing a fit here? Charlotte just gave birth. If anything happens to her, I won't let you off!" Henry snapped.
As the tension in the room kept rising, a few of Henry's friends stepped forward.
"She didn't do it on purpose. Take it easy," one of the guys said.
Henry glared at her in anger, like all those sweet moments between them had just been a lie.
"Didn't you hear her? She wants a divorce, again," Henry scoffed. "Sophia, stop acting like a kid. Don't forget that without me, you're nobody."
Sophia stood frozen. A strained smile was shown on her face.
No one knew how to hurt her better than the man she loved most.
Henry cradled Charlotte in his arms and headed out to get a doctor.
No one paid attention to her, so Sophia snatched the thermos and smashed it straight at Henry's head.
Everyone in the room was struck dumb.
But all Sophia could think of was what one of Henry's friends said.
Something about keeping her from getting pregnant.
All those treatments she had endured turned into sharp knives and slashed her heart.
"Henry, you're right. I'm nothing but a lunatic." Sophia's face was as pale as Charlotte's in his arms.
"You should feel lucky that smash didn't kill you," she continued.
Chaos broke out around Henry, and no one noticed when Sophia left.
When she got home, Sophia ignored the wound on the back of her head and slept for two days.
She felt as if she'd been run over. Every bone in her body ached terribly.
When she woke up, she blinked her dry eyes and called her lawyer.
"I want a divorce from Henry. He's the one at fault." Her voice was determined.
She sent all the video evidence she'd collected to her lawyer.
It wasn't long before her lawyer called her back.
"Ma'am, the evidence is valid. As per your prenup, once the divorce is finalized, all of Mr. Harrington's assets will be transferred to you," the lawyer informed her.
Sophia tossed her phone aside. The irony was all she could feel.
To keep the third divorce from happening, she had once signed an agreement with Henry.
Whoever wanted to leave would have to pay with what they valued most.
For Sophia, it was Rosewood Estate, the place her mother left her.
But Henry once promised, "You're the most valuable thing in my life. If I cheat, then I deserve to lose it all.
"Sophia, without you, money will be useless for me."
They'd both risked everything, yet none of it could stop his heart from changing.
But Sophia added one more clause to their agreement.
If Henry cheated, she could leave him and leave him penniless.
There was a sudden noise outside, and Henry hurried in, with Charlotte in his arms.
When he saw Sophia's pale, messy face, he furrowed his brow and almost let his concern slip. But those words were gone the moment he remembered her demand for a divorce.
He hated how Sophia used divorce to fix everything.
And he hated it more when Sophia stood up against him.
His expression turned aloof. "Thanks to you, Charlotte has to stay in bed for a few days. So do us all a favor and do not cause any more trouble."
Sophia stood on the second floor and looked worn out.
'Cause troubles?' she thought.
Sure, because she will never bother Henry again.
