Chapter 1
When I came home for summer break, I found a new girl sitting in my house.
My father, Frank Bennett, was sitting right next to her.
He looked at me and said coldly, "You're not my daughter. She is."
Even my brother, James Bennett, didn't hesitate to tell me to get out.
And that girl, who used to bully me at school, suddenly put on an innocent act and called me sister.
She kept setting me up, again and again.

School let out early, and I came home, suitcase in tow, all excited, only to find a new girl in the house.
She kept her head down, hiding her face, looking all nervous and sticking close to Frank like she was afraid of strangers.
Everyone in my family had a different look on their faces, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.
I hesitantly called out to my mother, Emma Bennett, and James.
Emma didn't respond. Her face twisted in pain as she turned away, refusing to meet my eyes. Even James stared at me coldly.
Frank calmly slapped a paternity test report down in front of me.
"You're not a Bennett," he said.
It was like a bolt from the blue. My head was buzzing, and my hands were shaking as I picked up the report.
It had Frank's name and the girl's name on it, and the results said they were father and daughter.
Her name was Emily Carter.
I stiffly looked up at the girl on the couch, who slowly stood up beside Frank.
That face, the one that haunted me for two years in high school, gave me that same malicious smile as in my nightmares.
I must have looked a mess, because Emma instinctively started to come over and hug me as she used to.
But Frank caught on and yanked up Emily's sleeve, revealing her arm, all black and blue.
"Sophia Bennett, while you were enjoying yourself with us, my real daughter was suffering," Frank said coldly.
"Those hardships should have been yours," he added.
Those words made Emma freeze in her tracks.
Emily tilted her head up, her eyes red and swollen with tears, and called out to her mother, Emma.
Emma turned and walked over to Emily, pulled her into a hug, and asked in a trembling voice if her eyes hurt.
I stood there, lost and anxious, clutching the paternity test so hard that my hands shook. I couldn't get a single word out.
How could I not be their child? I looked so much like Emma. And yet Emily's face mirrored mine so closely that I was left speechless standing in front of her.
I was terrified of her.
Even James, who always had my back, now looked at me with disgust. He turned to Frank and said, "Dad, it's time to set things right."
Frank gave a slight nod.
Then he looked down at me, with something in his eyes I couldn't figure out.
"So, get out of this house. You don't belong here," James said coldly.
I couldn't believe he said that to me. All I could do was look up at him, dumbfounded.
There was no love left in his eyes for me, replaced by cold, bitter hatred.
When I was five, Frank brought him home from the orphanage without warning. He didn't care how Emma felt and made me call him brother.
Emma's health got worse after I was born, and she thought Frank resented her for having a daughter. So she started spoiling me more and treating James worse. Back then, I was a clueless kid, but I always felt like James didn't like me much.
But I liked him, always pestering him to play with me.
At a party, some guys didn't like that he was the adopted kid, so they dragged him off somewhere quiet to rough him up. I jumped in front of him and took punches for him.
After that, he accepted me as his little sister, and from then on, he'd do anything for me.
Even when he came back from a trip, he'd always have a gift for me.
He always said I was the little sister he would cherish forever and that he would have my back as I had his. But now, how could he betray me like this?
