Chapter 4
"Fiona?" Damon's voice sounded.
When Fiona saw Damon, she quickly put away her resignation letter and replied in a flat voice, "Is there something you need, Mr. Rycroft?"
Damon's tone softened for once. "I'm sorry about earlier. Please don't blame Giselle. She's pregnant, so her temper isn't great. Try to understand her, okay? Does your face still hurt?"
He reached out, wanting to touch her face, but Fiona avoided his hand.
"Mr. Rycroft, about the twenty percent shares you promised me. Are you really giving it to me now?" Fiona asked.
"Yeah, consider it compensation," Damon said, handing her a share transfer document. "I've added another five percent, so it's twenty-five percent in total. Since you're not going anywhere, it doesn't really matter how much I give you."
Fiona took the document, sneering inwardly.
Not leaving? Nonsense. She would be out of here soon enough.
"Thank you, Mr. Rycroft. By the way, there's a document that needs your signature," Fiona said coolly.
She handed over her resignation letter, requesting his signature.
Just as Damon was about to look it over, Giselle came out and called, "Damon, are you finished? I'm starving."
He barely glanced at it before signing his name.
"All done," he said.
Before leaving, Giselle shot Fiona a look. "Ms. Drake, Damon told me you're a great cook. My maid's off right now, so why don't you come over after work and help out around the house? I'll make sure you're paid extra."
Fiona was about to refuse, but Damon cut her off. "Your cooking really is good. Just come over tonight and help Giselle out."
It would take three days to wrap things up at work, so Fiona nodded. "Okay."
Three days from now, they'd be done with each other for good.
She packed just a small bag and headed over to Damon and Giselle's new place.
As soon as she walked in, she saw the two of them sitting on the couch.
Damon had his head bent, ear pressed to Giselle's belly, smiling happily. "Hey, little one, it's Daddy. Did you miss me today?"
His smile stung her eyes, and Fiona remembered how Damon used to say, "Fiona, when we have a baby, our kid will be the happiest in the world. I'm going to give them all my love."
She'd pouted back then, "So what about me then?"
"Of course, you'll always be the one I love most. I love our baby because I love you. Fiona, I really can't live without you," Damon had said.
But now, everything was different.
Damon's heart was no longer hers.
They would never have a child together.
"You're here? Why are you just standing there? It's late, and Giselle's hungry. Go make dinner." Damon's icy words jerked her back to reality. "Giselle's pregnant, so her diet needs to be really strict.
"The nutritionist's menu is stuck on the fridge. Just stick to the menu when you cook."
Fiona didn't respond. She just asked, "Where's my room?"
The maid led her to the servants' quarters on the first floor. "Mr. Rycroft said this is your room."
The room was so tiny that it could barely fit a bed.
Fiona snorted. She really was just a maid to him now.
All these years, she'd looked after him in every possible way. Probably, he already forgot that they were just two ordinary people when this all began.
On her first night there, Fiona spent three hours cooking dinner.
She made sure the sea bass was perfectly deboned and the soup was just right.
When she brought the food out, Giselle barely glanced at it before shaking her head. "Ugh, this is so bland. I'm not eating this. Make something with actual taste."
"I'm just following the menu. Mr. Rycroft said I have to cook exactly what's on it," Fiona said.
"I told you to make it again," Giselle barked, her tone sharp and demanding.
With a scowl, Giselle knocked the sea bass off the plate, sending it crashing to the floor. The porcelain shattered everywhere, the sound echoing through the room.
Fiona watched as all her hard work was destroyed in an instant. Before she could even process the heartbreak, Damon stormed in and snapped at her. "Fiona, are you trying to upset Giselle on purpose?"
"Mr. Rycroft, you told me to cook for her. You said to follow the menu, and I did. She just refused to eat it and trashed everything, and somehow that's my fault?" Fiona shot back.
"Damon, don't blame Fiona. I took a bite and found a bone, so I accidentally dropped it. I really didn't mean to," Giselle said, her voice quivering as she played the victim.
Giselle started crying, looking all pitiful, and Damon immediately went to comfort her. "Forget it. We'll just eat out. Fiona, make sure you clean all this up."
As Giselle walked out, she shot Fiona a smug, triumphant smile.
Fiona didn't even look up, just quietly picked up the shards from the floor one by one.
Just two more days, and she would be out of Damon's life for good.
