Everyone whipped their heads around.

Alan Lowell stood at the end of the corridor.

He had a dark gray overcoat draped over his arm and a suitcase in his hand.

He looked thinner.

His cheekbones were sharper than I remembered. Dark circles shadowed his eyes from the brutal red-eye flight.

But his eyes were just as clear and piercing as they had always been.

Alan walked briskly toward us.

He walked right past Vincent without even a glance, stopping directly in front of me.

"Flight was delayed. Phone died. Sorry to keep you waiting."
