“You will not carry me.”

I crossed the room before Adrian could answer and climbed into my side of the bed.

He lowered the blanket over me, then walked around the mattress and lay down on the other side. The pillow between us formed a soft wall.

“I have three rules,” I said.

“Of course you do.”

“Don’t cross the pillow. Don’t steal my blanket. And don’t mistake this for permission to change the physical terms of our agreement.”

“Our contract already covers the third rule.”

“I prefer important rules in writing and spoken aloud.”
