I grabbed the phone before Dante could stop me.

"Luca, listen carefully. The council wants a death tonight. They'll get one—but it won't be mine. Lock down every entrance. Bring Victor to the main hall. And tell no one I'm coming armed."

I ended the call and turned to Dante. He was still wearing my body, but the fear in his eyes was purely his own.

"You just painted a target on yourself," he said.

"Good," I replied. "Now we know where they'll shoot."
