Chapter 1
My husband's mistress, Callie Bennett, messaged me a bed photo of her and my husband, Vincent Booth, in the middle of the night.
In the picture, she and Vincent were snuggled up together, and she wore a smug, self-satisfied grin.
Then she sent me a message. [Kylee, Vincent says you're frigid in bed, but with me, he is a completely different man.]
I stared at the photo, my hands shaking.
But I didn't cry.
I took a screenshot and forwarded it right to Callie's parents.
I added a message. [Mr. and Mrs. Bennett, your daughter is so busy. While she's in bed, she sends me photos to keep me updated. She must be enjoying being a side chick.]
The next day, Callie bombarded me with messages, begging for forgiveness.
She said her dad chased her down three blocks with a belt.
But what was more interesting was that her whole family was waiting outside my apartment building in the morning.
*****
At 11:30 PM, Callie sent me a photo.
In the picture, she and Vincent were snuggled up together.
She was bare-shouldered, her long hair spread messily across the pillow, and she was deliberately facing the camera, flashing a triumphant, smug grin.
Vincent was asleep, and his profile was turned toward her.
The background was the gray sheets I picked out myself.
She'd attached a message to the phone. [Kylee, Vincent says you're frigid in bed, but with me, he is a completely different man.]
I stared at the photo, my fingertips shaking as I clutched my phone.
My chest felt like it was boiling with rage.
But I didn't cry.
Tears were useless in this world.
I calmly took a screenshot.
I remembered that Callie's social media cover photo was a family shot of her and her parents, so I found her account easily and tapped on her profile picture.
Her dad, Damien Bennett, looked like a stern middle-aged man.
Her mom, Clover Bennett, was smiling warmly.
Then I found Clover's social media contact.
At a party once, Clover had enthusiastically followed me, saying we should stay in touch.
Well, now it was definitely time for a little chat.
I sent the screenshot straight to Clover. Then, I followed up with the original photo as well.
After a moment's thought, I dug up Damien's number and sent him the photo, too.
Once I was done with all that, I sent a message to Clover. [Mrs. Bennett, Callie is still thinking of me at this hour. She sent me a little report from bed. She seems to be really enjoying her time.]
Kylee: [But I wonder, do you and Mr. Bennett also think she's such a thoughtful daughter?]
After sending it, I put my phone on silent.
Finally, I got some peace.
I headed to the bathroom and took a really satisfying hot shower.
The water washed over me, taking all the gross feelings inside with it.
In the mirror, I looked a little pale, but my eyes were shining with determination.
I told myself, "Kylee Stone, you're not at fault. The one who betrayed you and the one who tried to steal your life are the ones to blame. So let them be the ones to pay."
I headed to the guest room and lay down on the bed there.
There was no way I was going to sleep in the bed they'd used. It felt dirty to me.
I slept dreamlessly through the night.
At 7 AM the next morning, my phone was blowing up nonstop.
Every single message was from Callie.
Callie: [Kylee, are you insane?]
Callie: [What are you trying to do? Did you seriously send that photo to my parents?]
Callie: [My dad's going to kill me!]
Callie: [Please, I'm begging you. Explain to my parents. Tell them it was a mix-up.]
Callie: [Kylee, I'm sorry. I really am.]
Callie: [Please, delete me. I swear I'll never do it again.]
As I scrolled through her messages, I found it ridiculous.
It was too late to regret and beg for forgiveness.
I didn't reply to her.
I blocked and deleted her without hesitation.
But the real drama was getting started.
At 8 AM, as I was about to head out for work, the doorbell rang.
I peeked through the peephole and saw three people standing in the hallway.
It was Callie and her ever-so-kind-looking parents.
But at that moment, all that warmth was gone from Clover's, replaced by pure spite.
Damien's face was thunderous, and he was clutching something in his hand.
Callie cowered behind them, her eyes puffy and red, shooting daggers at my door.
The whole Bennett family was now crowding right outside my door, blocking the entrance.
The doorbell was blaring, loud enough to shake the walls, over and over, nonstop.
It felt like they were about to rip the door right off its hinges.
