Chapter 4
He continued, "When you wanted to study overseas, I waited for you.
"When you were busy, and you didn't reply for days, I still waited.
"Your parents looked down on me, wouldn't even look at me during dinner, and all I could do was keep smiling, no matter how humiliating it felt.
"Isn't this all for you?
"But now, all I wanted was for you to be a real girlfriend, and you actually slap me? Ask me to leave?"
Zane's frustration bubbled up like water flooding out of a storm drain in heavy rain.
He continued, "Sean Porter's girlfriend comes to accompany him every weekend. Leo Gibson's girlfriend is always finding new ways to make him feel good!
"Yvonne, I'm not a saint. I'm a man, I have normal needs.
"Six years, and I haven't even laid a finger on you. Do you know what it's been like for me these past six years?
I listened to his whiny, self-pitying complaints and suddenly felt absurd.
He described himself as a devoted martyr.
But just two hours ago, he was clearly carrying a bag of things to relax with another woman.
The words were right there, but I didn't say them.
Even arguing with him for another second made me feel sick, like I was dirty just for being involved.
I said coldly, "Since you're really that miserable, then let's break up."
Zane snapped, "Break up? Yvonne, are you crazy?"
He stood up suddenly, grabbed my wrist hard, and dragged me to the bedroom.
He continued, "I won't break up! I love you too much. There's no way I'd ever let you go!
"So that's it! You don't plan to come back, right?
"You've got someone else over there, don't you? You have long wanted to break up with me, haven't you?"
I struggled hard, but his grip only tightened, and my back was pressed against the wall.
I shouted, "What... What are you doing? Let go of me!"
Zane ignored me and leaned his head close to my ear.
He said, "If that's the case, then tonight's all we've got left. Yvonne, let me really have you, just once.
"You'll know when you try it. I won't let you regret it."
Then his knee shoved against me.
My blood was cold all over.
He whispered, "Yvonne, trust me. You'll fall in love with me again."
His hot, sticky breath washed over my face. I couldn't help screaming.
Zane covered my mouth quickly.
I sank my teeth into his hand and bit down so hard that blood oozed from the corner of my mouth.
He let go with a scream.
Taking advantage of the opening, I staggered toward the window.
The disguise on Zane's face was completely shattered, his eyes fierce and menacing as he walked towards me.
He sneered, "Go on, jump! Like you'd actually do it!"
I clutched the window frame. The biting wind from the eleventh floor dried my tears, only for them to well up again.
Just as he was one step away from me, the apartment door was kicked open from the outside.
Zane turned back in shock.
I saw a shadow flash by.
The next second, I was in an embrace, his arms cold from the winter night.
Chase Hamilton said, "It's alright, Yvonne. Don't worry."
His voice came from above me, shaky with relief and lingering fear.
He was my childhood sweetheart.
Back then, I refused the engagement his family arranged for us and chose Zane instead.
We never met each other again after that.
I bumped into him on the flight home this time.
He stuck by my side all day, and he was there to rescue me just now.
Two police officers followed behind him, one of them asking, "Who called the police just now?"
Chase took me into his arms and said, "I did. This guy tried to assault my friend."
Zane's face turned fiercely to please right away.
He said, "Please, this is all just a misunderstanding! She's my girlfriend. We just had a little argument!
"It's our private affairs. He's an outsider, I don't know why he's involved!"
Then he turned to me, his eyes pleading with me for help.
He begged, "Yvonne, please, tell the police you're my girlfriend. We've been together for six years! Tell them it's all a misunderstanding!"
I gently pushed Chase and took out a recorder from my pocket.
I said calmly, "Everything that happened since he walked in tonight is recorded on here, including him trying to assault me and forcing me to jump off the building just now."
Zane's smile froze on his face right away.
Zane stammered, "Yvonne? You... You were recording!
"What did you mean? You... You did all this on purpose?"
He looked at me and then at Chase.
Suddenly, he seemed to realize something.
Zane snapped, "So that's the case, you just hooked up with him and deliberately framed me, didn't you?"
Chase gave a dry laugh and said coldly, "Frame you?
"If I want you to disappear from Yvonne's life, I don't need to frame you at all.
"And we're not like you. We don't do nasty shit like that."
