Chapter 4
Seeing the seriousness on my face, Damian’s mother quickly reached for her phone.
“Fine. If you won’t listen to me, maybe you’ll listen to your mate.” She called Damian at once.
Before I could say anything, she’d placed the call on speaker.
It connected after a few rings and Hailey went straight to the point. “Damian. Your fiancée is standing here insisting the mating ceremony is cancelled.” As she spoke, she glanced at me.
Damian was silent for a second.
“Emery. Can you please stop making trouble?” When he finally spoke, his voice was rough with infuriation. “You’ve been upset since I left, and now, you’re taking it this far. Are you not tired of causing a ruckus?”
I stepped away from the stairs and moved close to the phone.
“This is not a ruckus. I don’t want to mate with you anymore, Damian.” I steadily said.
Hearing that, Damian’s breath puffed angrily from the other end.
“Enough, Emery!” He half yelled.
Then Chloe’s voice came from the background.
“Damian, maybe you should calm down.” She started carefully. “She’s probably just overwhelmed and doesn’t really mean it.”
That was all it took for Damian’s anger to vanish.
“You hear that? Now stop embarrassing yourself in front of my family and stay in the packhouse.” He strictly addressed me.
I ignored the jab.
“This isn’t my home. It’s never been.” I remarked.
Conrad, The Anderson family’s driver, walked through the front door carrying a thick document folder.
“Mrs. Anderson, these were requested by Alpha Damian.” He said.
Hailey took the folder from him then she turned and threw it at my feet. It landed with a thud against the floor.
“These are your documents. Take them and leave.” Hailey said.
I looked down at my feet and found my passports, certificates, old documents and a few other items scattered on the floor.
For a second, I wondered why Damian would ask Conrad to bring everything to me. Then it clicked. It was because he knew I wouldn’t be able to get through the building’s security once I left.
This was their way of humiliating me.
I bent down and picked up the folder. My eyes landed on the engagement ring placed on the cocktail table.
I went to take it and caught a glimpse of a victorious smirk on Hailey’s face.
Only instead of wearing it back, I looked at the ring in my palm and without a word, I placed it in between the folder.
“Give both to your son. Let him know I’m set on rejecting him as my mate and severing all ties.” I spoke up, dropping the folder on the cocktail table.
Hailey’s face paled in shock before it reddened.
Whereas, Damian had started pacing from where he was.
“Emery, think carefully. You really want to reject me? You’re willing to throw away three good years?” He pressed, desperation creeping into his voice.
“Yes. I’m very certain.” I answered, not backing down.
And Tristan snickered from beside his mother.
Damian went silent. Before he could speak again, the front door opened and Leah raced in. She walked over to the cocktail table and set a file bag onto it.
The impact made the documents I’d placed on it shift.
“What is that?” Hailey frowned.
“Something you might want to see.” Leah smirked, and pulled out the first stack.
It contained bank transfer records, payment receipts and copies of property documents.
Another bundle had emails, messages showing me handling purchases, settling bills, arranging repairs, and managing expenses for the pack.
Hailey’s face slowly lost its color.
Tristan reached for one of the documents and Leah pulled it away.
“What exactly are you trying to prove?” Hailey stepped forward, snarling.
“That Emery isn’t some helpless wolf your family rescued and kept around out of charity. She paid, contributed, handled things for the pack while everyone treated her like she should be grateful for breathing the same air as you.” Leah replied supportively, unfazed even though she was standing in front of the Alpha’s mother.
For a fleeting moment, Hailey was transfixed on her spot.
Her fingers trembled as she picked up one of the transfer records.
“This…” Her eyes frantically moved over the page. “How were you able to get your hands on these payments?” Her question was directed toward me.
I didn’t answer.
Leah stared at Hailey and laughed in irony. “Should where we got it matter? You kept telling Emery that the pack gave her everything. But you seem to have forgotten how much she put into it after she moved in.”
In rage, Hailey slammed the document down. “Those were voluntary.”
“So was her relationship with Damian, but apparently, the moment Emery decides she doesn’t want him anymore, everything you ever did suddenly becomes a debt she owes you.” Leah said, pointing at the files and I intentionally didn’t make any attempt to stop her.
“What the hell is going on?” Damian’s voice came from the phone.
“Just your family being reminded darling Emery didn’t live off them all these years.” Leah glanced at the phone that was still in Hailey’s hand.
At the response, Damian’s voice changed instantly.
“You’re threatening my family now? You’re making accusations, bringing documents into my packhouse and now threatening to reject me?” There was an unmistakable surge of anger in his words.
I scoffed ridiculously.
“Believe me or not, there is nothing left to fix between us, Damian.” I told him straight away.
