Chapter 5

I sank against the wall and called 911.

The dispatcher asked if I was pregnant.

"Yes. About seven weeks."

It was the first time I had said it aloud.

"Is anyone with you?"

I looked at the empty street where Cole's truck had disappeared minutes earlier.

"No. I'm alone."

While I waited for the ambulance, I called Margaret. She lived behind the restaurant and was now listed as my emergency contact.

"Ava?"

"I'm at the old restaurant." I stared at the blood soaking my dress. "I think I'm losing my baby."

"Don't move. I'm coming."

Margaret arrived with the ambulance…
