Chapter 2
I went back to the room.
I ignored the empty seat beside Edward.
Sitting in the corner, I checked my phone.
Edward's expression grew colder as he drank red wine, one glass after another.
Chloe sneered, "Some people are truly shameless. Just to get Edward back, she even cooked up lies about getting married.
"Does she really think she's made of gold, that Edward can't live without her?
"She's nothing but trash Edward toyed with for four years. Just like her mom, who died young, all she ever does is plot against men."
I turned off my phone and hurled it right at Chloe's face.
"Don't you dare say another word," I snapped.
The tension in the room was so thick that no one dared to make a sound.
Edward frowned and glanced at me, looking a bit drunk. With Chloe's painful sobs ringing in his ears, he set his glass down.
"Lena, apologize to her," Edward ordered.
Edward's voice was icy.
Whenever there was a conflict between Chloe and me, he always took her side.
I couldn't help but sneer to myself.
My indifference only made Edward's frown deepen.
In the past, no matter how much I hated it, I'd always swallow my pride and apologize to Chloe first, just to keep the peace between us.
Chloe taunted, "What's wrong? Are you getting mad now?
"Did I say anything wrong? Lena, you're just a bitch who was born but never truly raised."
Chloe ducked behind Edward, taunting me as usual.
She knew that no matter how nasty her words got, Edward would always have her back.
"Chloe, don't talk to my girlfriend that way," Edward said softly.
Sure enough, Edward just ruffled her hair, acting like all her insults toward me didn't matter at all.
I suddenly burst out laughing.
I picked up the bottle of red wine and poured myself a glass.
Edward's eyes softened, thinking I was finally ready to bow my head to Chloe.
Chloe instinctively reached out.
She flashed a wicked grin.
"Lena, oh wait, Mrs. Sinclair, you know, the way you're raising your glass right now makes you look just like a mutt begging for scraps," Chloe sneered.
I just smiled and said, "Is that so?"
The next moment, while Chloe was still caught off guard, I smashed the glass. Then I yanked her by the hair and dumped the wine, with glass shards and all, right down her throat.
Edward shoved me away in an instant.
He snapped, "Lena, are you out of your mind?
"Chloe was just mouthing off. She didn't actually hurt you!"
"So you think Chloe can just insult my mom and me whenever she wants?" I shot back.
Blood trickled down the corner of Chloe's mouth.
She leaned against Edward, looking at me with a mix of terror and venom in her eyes.
I narrowed my eyes.
I sneered, "Keep staring, huh?
"Chloe, looks like you're asking to lose your eyes as well."
"Lena!" Edward shouted.
He couldn't hold back anymore and shot me a low, icy warning.
He bent down and scooped Chloe into his arms, holding her protectively.
Everyone finally snapped out of their shock, scrambling to open the restroom door for Edward so he could rush Chloe in and tend to her injuries.
I stayed in my seat, hearing the argument in the restroom get more and more heated.
"Edward, come on, what are you even thinking? Chloe's your closest friend. She's been hanging out with us since we were kids," one of the guys said.
"Who even is Lena? She's crazy, man. Why can't you just let her go? She messed Chloe up bad. You can't just let this slide," another chimed in.
"Then what do you want me to do?" Edward shot back.
Edward's annoyed voice cut through the noise, and the whole room went dead quiet.
After a long pause, Edward finally broke the silence.
"Alright, I'll make Lena answer for what she did to Chloe. Let's get Chloe to the hospital first," Edward said.
"But... what about Charles? Didn't your grandpa say we had to get on his good side this time?" one of the guys asked.
Edward opened the door with a sullen face.
His buddies followed him out, each giving me a dirty look before helping Chloe down the stairs.
Only the two of us were left in the room.
Edward rubbed his brow, looking tired.
"Lena, you went too far this time. Even if you're jealous of Chloe because of me, you can't actually lay a hand on her," Edward said.
When did Edward get so narcissistic?
I kept quiet, just finding the whole thing pretty amusing.
I pulled out my bank card and set it on the table.
"I'll cover her medical bills," I said, my voice flat.
"Edward, we're already over," I added.
That night, four years ago, Edward spent the whole night out in the pouring rain, finally falling to his knees in front of my mother's portrait.
He kissed me with desperate hunger, unable to hold back.
"Lena, please, just pay me some attention. Let's be together. Let me be the one to take care of you, just like your mom did, okay?" Edward's voice was thick with emotion.
