Chapter 5
When Sadie regained consciousness, she opened her eyes, and all she could see was endless white.
She was not dead after all.
She tried to move, but the moment she did, agony tore through her, like her whole body had been ripped into a thousand pieces.
Just then, the door to the hospital room opened.
Stephen walked in, and for a split second, Sadie caught a flicker of pain in his eyes, but it was gone in an instant.
He spoke in a cold, emotionless voice. "Jessica lost her baby because of you, and her uterus was damaged.
"I'm taking her abroad for treatment and to help her recover. Ben, my and Jessica's eldest son, will be staying with you for now. You'll be responsible for looking after him."
Sadie couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of it all.
Jessica's miscarriage had nothing to do with Sadie.
Stephen was the one who made Sadie lose her child, and thanks to him, she'd lost her uterus completely.
But now he expected her to take care of his and Jessica's son?
Sadie shot him a mocking glare. "If you care so much, you take care of him. Get lost. I don't want to see your face."
Stephen's expression turned stormy, irritation flashing in his eyes. "You're the one who screwed up. Like it or not, you're stuck with him. The nanny will bring him over soon. Take good care of him. If he gets a scratch, you'll pay for it."
With that, he turned and slammed the door behind him.
Not long after, the nanny came in, cradling a cute little boy who.
As soon as the boy saw Sadie, he blinked his big eyes and called out in a soft, childish voice, "Hi, ma'am."
Sadie had always loved children, and she once thought she and Stephen would have a child as beautiful as this one.
But in the end, she lost everything.
And now, her husband wanted her to look after his and his mistress's child.
But soon, she wouldn't be Stephen's wife anymore.
Sadie was about to ask the nanny to leave with the child when suddenly, a pair of soft little hands pressed gently against her face.
"Ma'am, why are your eyes so red? Did someone bully you?" the boy asked.
Sadie's heart melted as she looked at the child in front of her. None of what Stephen did had anything to do with this kid.
As Sadie was about to say something, a sudden sting shot across her cheek.
Without thinking, she reached out and shoved the child in front of her away.
Ben screamed, his voice cracking with fear as he was practically thrown backward. His back slammed into the wall, then he hit the floor hard.
All of a sudden, blood gushed out of his mouth.
Just then, the door to the hospital room was pushed open from the outside, and an angry voice rang out. "Sadie, you've really outdone yourself.
"Wasn't ruining one child enough for you? Now you're trying to hurt the second one, too?"
Stephen, furious, stormed over and grabbed Sadie's hand. "If Jessica hadn't come back because she was worried about Ben, would you have let him die, too?"
Jessica saw Ben lying on the floor, blood pouring from his mouth, and crawled and stumbled over to him, tears falling in a panic. "Ben, what's wrong? Don't scare me, please. Doctor, please, save my child."
Sadie's cheek burned with pain, and she shoved Stephen away. "Stephen, my face is hurt. He hit me first."
Stephen looked at her flawless face and suddenly laughed.
He grabbed her and dragged her into the restroom, forcing her to stand in front of the mirror. "He hurt your face? Really? Then tell me. Where exactly did he hurt you?"
Sadie stared at her reflection in disbelief. There wasn't a single mark on her face.
But the burning and stinging under her skin told her she really was hurt.
Then, it hit her. It was fiberglass.
Sadie turned to Stephen, her eyes rimmed with red from tears. "Stephen, it was that kid. He pressed fiberglass against my face."
Stephen looked as if he had just heard a joke. "He's a little kid, so sweet and innocent. How could he possibly do something like that? And fiberglass?
"Adults wouldn't dare to touch it. Do you really think a child would handle it?
"Sadie, I really underestimated you. If you are so fond of hurting others, maybe you shouldn't have your hands at all."
