Chapter 3
Chapter 3 – Unwelcome Miracle
The pregnancy test didn’t lie.
Emma stared at the double pink lines in the clinic restroom, her hands trembling so violently the stick nearly fell into the sink.
“No,” she whispered. “No, no, no.”
But the nausea hadn’t been food poisoning. The missed period wasn’t stress. And the flutter in her stomach wasn’t nerves.
A soft knock.
“Miss Harris?” the nurse called gently. “Are you okay in there?”
Emma opened the door slowly, color drained from her face. “Can I speak to a doctor?”
---
Later that afternoon, she sat on the park bench outside the clinic, the cold wind needling her coat. Her mind spun like a broken carousel.
How would she tell him?
Would he even believe her?
She clutched the sonogram printout against her chest.
Ryan hadn’t spoken to her beyond clipped work directives since that night. If he remembered it at all, he was pretending not to.
But she remembered everything—his hand in her hair, the way he whispered her name like it mattered.
And now this.
Her fingers curled protectively around her belly.
She had to try.
---
The office buzzed with IPO preparations. Emma waited outside Ryan’s glass-walled office, heart pounding as she clutched a sealed manila envelope.
The receptionist eyed her. “He’s back-to-back today.”
“I’ll only need five minutes.”
“You’ll be lucky to get two.”
The door opened suddenly.
Ryan stepped out, phone pressed to his ear, barking into the receiver. “No, I don’t care what Shanghai said. If the audit isn’t clean, we delay. Period.”
His eyes landed on Emma.
He ended the call with a sigh. “What is it?”
“Five minutes,” she said quietly.
Ryan checked his watch. “Three. Walk with me.”
They moved down the hallway toward the private conference lounge. Emma tried to collect her thoughts, but they scattered with every step.
He shut the door behind them. “So? What’s the crisis?”
She handed him the envelope.
He opened it.
The sonogram slid out.
Ryan stared at it. Then looked up.
“What... is this?”
“I’m pregnant.”
He blinked. “Excuse me?”
“I’m nine weeks,” she said. “From that night. At the gala.”
Silence.
Then a cold chuckle. “This is some kind of joke.”
“It’s not.”
“You think I’ll fall for this? That I’ll abandon Rebecca and marry the loyal little secretary because you’re—what—lonely?”
“It’s your child.”
He stepped back, eyes narrowing. “You planned this.”
“What?”
“That night—you stayed. You knew I’d had too much.”
“Ryan—”
“You seduced me.”
Emma’s voice cracked. “You kissed me first. You told me not to leave.”
He threw the envelope onto the table. “I was drunk. It didn’t mean anything.”
“It meant everything to me.”
“Enough.” He raked a hand through his hair. “This never happened.”
She pulled out her backup—a photocopy of the hotel’s access log and a blurry still from the penthouse security cam.
He grabbed them—and shredded them. “Do you think this helps your case? This destroys me. You want to ruin my career?”
“I want to raise our baby.”
“You think I’m letting you weaponize a child against me?” His voice dropped. “Name your price.”
Emma stared at him. “You think I’m doing this for money?”
“I’ll make it generous. Quiet. You’ll disappear. The kid gets trust fund access, and you get distance.”
“I don’t want your money.” Her voice shook with rage. “I want my child to have a name. Not a bribe.”
Ryan's jaw clenched. “Then you’ll do this without me.”
“I planned to.”
He opened the door. “If you go public with this, I’ll deny it. No one will believe you.”
“I’ll protect the baby,” she said softly. “Even if you won’t.”
---
That evening, Emma stood in her apartment, one hand on her stomach, the other gripping the edge of the kitchen sink.
The nausea returned, but this time it wasn’t morning sickness—it was fear.
She whispered to the quiet room, “I don’t need him. I just need to be strong.”
The next day, she submitted her resignation.
---
Two weeks later, she received a call from HR.
“We’re offering a transition package,” the rep said, voice oily. “Two months’ salary, references, and medical coverage. But you must sign an NDA.”
Emma stared at the email attachment as the rep spoke.
“It includes a non-disparagement clause. Standard stuff.”
“It’s hush money.”
“It’s protection—for all parties.”
She hung up without answering.
The email sat unopened for days.
---
At her first prenatal appointment, the doctor smiled gently. “Would you like to hear the heartbeat?”
Emma hesitated. “Is it too early?”
“We might catch it. Let’s try.”
The monitor crackled. Then—a faint, fluttering sound.
Emma gasped.
It was real.
Her baby was real.
And she would protect them—no matter who tried to silence her.
