The phone rang for a long time before I finally picked up.

My voice was soft, a little hoarse from sleep. "Hello?"

Alex's heart skipped a beat.

He cleared his throat, trying to sound impatient. "Norah, where's my navy blue scarf? The one you knitted for me. Where did you leave it?"

There was a brief silence on the other end.

I replied in a calm, almost indifferent tone, "I threw it away."

"You threw it away?" Alex's voice shot up. "Who said you could toss my stuff?"
