Chapter 3
Out of nowhere, Andrew went crazy.
He slammed on the brakes.
Emily hit her head on the windshield, and my head slammed into the back of the front seat.
Andrew was furiously pounding the steering wheel.
He lifted his head. His face was once again cold and indifferent.
"Get out," he said.
I thought I hit something sharp just now, and my head was spinning.
Everything sounded muffled.
Ever since I got a second chance at life, I'd been super careful about my health. Suddenly, I was terrified.
"Andrew, take me to the hospital. I think I'm hurt," I said.
Andrew's voice was even colder. "Natalie, don't make me drag you out. Get out of the car."
I couldn't tell if it was the pain or the fear, but I felt so wronged.
"Andrew, take me to the hospital. I think I'm dying," I pleaded.
Andrew's hand on the steering wheel trembled slightly.
He stayed silent for what felt like ages.
"Andrew, do you think Mrs. Carter is just making a scene about going to the hospital because she doesn't want to go pick up our daughter with us?" Emily said.
She had a bright red mark on her forehead, and she made a point of showing it off to Andrew.
She dragged her feet as she opened the car door, but didn't actually get out.
"Whatever. You take Mrs. Carter to the hospital. I'll go pick up Lily myself. Let her down. Guess Natalie matters more anyway," Emily said.
Before Emily could even step out, Andrew leaned over her, slamming the car door shut.
Then he got out of the car.
He grabbed me by the collar and dragged me out, while my eyes were squeezed shut.
Without a second thought, he hit the gas and sped off.
So Andrew had no clue that after he ditched me, I passed out right there on the sidewalk.
I was out cold.
Eventually, a random passerby answered when my best friend called.
And that was how I got sent to the hospital.
When I woke up, my best friend Grace Bennett was standing with her back to me.
The heartless silhouette of Andrew walking away from me flashed through my mind.
"Don't call him!" I blurted out.
Maybe because my body was so weak, my heart felt messed up.
At that moment, I felt bitter and wronged because of how heartless Andrew was.
Seeing how pale I looked, Grace was still holding her phone, with the dial screen still open.
She shot me an annoyed glare.
"Lucky you got here in time, or things could've gotten ugly. And him? Seriously, you two aren't even divorced yet, and he can't even bother to show his face?" Grace snapped.
I couldn't help but smile at Grace, the only real friend I had in this world.
Thank goodness she still had no idea that Andrew had left me stranded on the side of the road.
If she ever found out, she'd totally blow a fuse.
"Grace, you know there's nothing left between me and Andrew," I said.
"I don't know about that," Grace shot back.
She continued, "All I know is Andrew promised right in front of me that he'd love you forever. So what gives him the right to change his mind?"
After Andrew and I started giving each other the silent treatment, everyone kept asking what went down between us and how things became like this.
It wasn't long before people started whispering about Emily always being by Andrew's side.
A bunch of the society ladies started gossiping. "So what if they fell into each other head over heels? Didn't even make it three years."
In our circle, those picture-perfect marriages were mostly a facade. Most of them were already falling apart behind the scenes.
Andrew and I were no exception.
While I wasn't paying attention, Grace, still pissed off, couldn't help herself and called Andrew.
She put it on speaker.
"What's the matter?" Andrew's voice came over the speaker, cold and a bit rough, as if he'd just rolled out of bed.
"Andrew, Natalie's in the hospital. Get over here, now," Grace snapped.
Andrew went silent for a few seconds.
"Sorry, I'm leaving for a business trip soon. Can't make it," he said.
Right after, a million dollars popped up in my bank account.
I grabbed my phone and waved it at Grace, grinning.
That call was worth a fortune.
