Chapter 3
Series 1 Chapter 3
Inside the penthouse suite of the Ritz-Carlton.
I stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the intersecting neon streams of New York traffic far below.
On the table, my phone vibrated continuously, its screen flashing light against the darkness over and over.
I didn't reach for it. I didn't even need to look to know what filled the screen.
In the three hours since Chloe posted that meticulously edited video online, my world had been submerged in tens of thousands of curses.
The high-society wives who had once smiled so politely at me during fundraising galas were now removing me from every charitable committee group chat at lightning speed.
David's message appeared.
Katherine, I've canceled your bank card.
Stop pretending you can survive without me.
Post a public apology to Elena, admit you lost control, and I'll continue sending you a monthly allowance.
I laughed.
He still thought I'd left Wall Street twelve years ago.
I never did.
I unlocked a private banking app.
The balance appeared.
Available Assets
$148.7 MILLION
Untouched.
Exactly where I'd left it.
David thought he'd frozen my life.
He'd only frozen the grocery card.
In the top right corner of the screen, a charge alert from a few hours ago was flashing.
$50,000
Cartier Fifth Avenue
Authorized User:
Chloe Johnson.
I stared at the screen.
She hadn't bought Elena that necklace with her own money.
She'd bought it with mine.
The last trace of warmth inside me disappeared.
No wonder Chloe could be so incredibly generous today, gifting a fifty-thousand-dollar Cartier diamond necklace to Elena.
She hadn't used any company internship allowance. She had simply stumbled upon the growth fund account I had set up for her years ago.
Assuming it was just some dead money left over from my days as an executive, she had secretly linked it to her digital wallet to flatter her father’s mistress.
My own daughter, enjoying the elite education I provided, using my own wallet to humiliate me.
Since things had come to this, let us start the settlement with the most basic bills.
I called Leonardo.
He answered on the second ring.
"Good evening, Mrs. Miller."
"Freeze everything."
A brief silence.
"Everything?"
"Everything."
"When?"
"Ten tomorrow morning."
"It'll be done."
After hanging up, I opened the iMessage app on my phone.
The pinned family chat, titled "The Johnsons," was buzzing with notifications.
David had shared several photos from the living room celebrating Chloe’s graduation.
In the pictures, David had his arm around a youthful, glowing Elena, while Chloe flaunted the Cartier diamond necklace around her neck, all three of them smiling radiantly.
Chloe had texted the group: "Thanks for the graduation gift, Dad! And thank you, Elena, for helping out tonight. Some people are just psychologically warped and violent. I bet she's losing her mind in some cheap, run-down motel right now."
David had replied with a thumbs-up: "Don't let your mother ruin the mood. She's been out of touch with reality for too long; she's completely obsolete now."
Looking at the texts, my inner core didn't even register a ripple.
I left the family group.
For these years,
I'd begged to keep this family together.
Tonight,
I walked away without looking back.
With that done, I posted an update directly to my Instagram profile, precisely tagging both David’s and Chloe’s official accounts.
The caption was concise :
Please remove yourselves from my building before 10:00 a.m. tomorrow.
You are no longer welcome there.
David: Enjoy your little fantasy. You'll be begging to come home by tomorrow.
Chloe added three crying-laughing faces.
I locked my phone.
Let them laugh.
By ten tomorrow morning,
they would discover
that the woman they had thrown away
owned the ground beneath their feet.
