Chapter 3
I drove to his company by myself to look for him.
In the underground parking garage at his company, I ran into Lillian.
I heard her scolding the security guard. "Are you doing your job? Why are you letting anyone into the company?"
I knew she meant me.
I wasn't an employee of Eric's company.
The security guard was a young guy, looking flustered as he tried to explain, "She looks like the High Priestess of the Moon Goddess, so I figured she wasn't a threat."
Lillian sneered, "The High Priestess of the Moon Goddess? Her? She's only a useless old hag."
With that, she strutted over to me in her high heels, her eyes full of disdain. "Hey, did you know?
"Eric bid for me a set of antique jewelry worth over a million dollars at the auction last night."
"Oh, I see," I said.
Lillian let out a mocking laugh. "You're really good-for-nothing. Doesn't that piss you off?"
She looked me up and down, sizing me up.
Then she spotted my slightly rounded belly.
"Oh, so you're pregnant too," she said. "You think having his baby will make Eric stick around, huh?"
She stepped closer, her eyes locked on my belly. "That's pathetic. You can't keep your mate, so you think having a kid will make him stay."
I let out a mocking chuckle at her, showing no intention of arguing with her.
Whether I was capable or not wasn't up to her.
If I didn't have what it took, Eric wouldn't get where he was.
He wouldn't have been able to buy her that set of 19th-century jewelry, either.
And she wouldn't be strutting around like she owned the place.
There was always a reason behind everything.
"So, you and Eric have been married for ten years, huh?" Lillian said.
She tilted her head, her lips curling into a mocking smirk. "Here's the truth. Eric and I have been together for more than nine years."
She fixed her gaze on me, not blinking, waiting to see how I'd react.
I was stone-faced.
Honestly, I already knew that.
Back when I was dedicated to helping Eric build his business, he was already a two-timer.
If this had happened before, I probably would've lost my temper and made a scene.
But now, nothing could get to me anymore.
All I wanted was to cut every last tie with him as soon as possible.
Lillian was stunned when she saw that I didn't react at all.
In an instant, she was gone.
As I was about to head for the elevator, a sports car came roaring at me.
I couldn't react fast enough. The car hit me hard, knocking me to the ground, blood pooling around me.
Lillian got out of the car and walked over to me.
She looked down at me, her gaze full of contempt. "Eric is a top-ranking Alpha. You're no great shakes. You don't deserve to be his Luna.
"I'm his perfect mate.
"Oh, and here's good news." She grinned. "I'm pregnant too.
"Eric said I'm the only one who gets to have his baby."
With that, Lillian turned back to her car, started the engine, and sped off.

Once I was found, I was rushed to the hospital for emergency care.
After the initial check-up, the doctor said my injuries weren't too serious, but the baby was in bad shape.
He asked if I wanted them to contact my husband.
I shook my head.
After the emergency efforts, the doctor broke the news to me with regret that my baby was gone.
I burst into tears.
This was the second time I'd lost a child.
The first time I lost a child was not long after we got married.
Back then, I was working myself to the bone to help Eric get his business off the ground.
I didn't even realize I was pregnant.
One day, Eric got really sick. To save him, I donated much blood to him until I fainted.
As a result, our first child was gone.
I was crying my eyes out, unable to believe it.
Eric kept comforting me.
He held me in his arms, telling me we'd have another child.
But that hope turned into nearly ten years of waiting.

As I was being wheeled out of the ER, my phone buzzed.
It was a message from an unknown number.
It showed a prenatal ultrasound photo.
Attached to the photo was the text: [I'm the only one who gets to have Eric's baby.
[Our child will grow up to be a powerful Alpha like Eric.]
It was obvious that Lillian sent it to rub it in.
But Lillian had no idea that Eric wasn't an Alpha at all.
He was an ordinary werewolf who didn't even qualify as an Omega.
His success and so-called Alpha reputation resulted from my full devotion to him.
Without me, he'd be a nobody.
