After an all-nighter bingeing trashy shows with my bestie, I suddenly felt dizzy at work the next day. A quick hospital trip later, I found out I had a mass in my brain. Three months of chemo left me twenty pounds lighter. I decided to just end it all and jump into the ocean. My best friend tried to scare me out of it. "If you drown in the ocean, they'll never find your body. You'll never rest in peace." That woke me right up. I immediately booked a private body recovery diver. The guy was handsome and a man of few words. But his height and build looked exactly like the ex I had a nasty breakup with five years ago. I leaned in for a closer look. His face matched, too. Then I met those icy eyes. Oh. It was him. I lost all interest and turned to leave, but then I heard him scoff. "Sophie, if you regret dumping me and want me back, just say it." Annoyed, I glared back at him. "I'm just buying insurance in case I ever accidentally fall into the water. Is that a crime?" He stared at me in a long, resentful silence before finally speaking. "Fine." I whipped out the contract and handed him a pen. Just to be safe, I double-checked the terms. "I just need to give you a day's notice, and you'll be on call, right?" As if afraid I would try to cling to him, his voice went totally flat. "I charge per retrieval." Relieved, I agreed immediately, "Of course." The contract clearly stated a flat rate per job. It wasn't like I could die twice anyway, right?
