Chapter 1
When I was five months pregnant, I started hearing the inner voice of my unborn baby for the first time.
'Mom, you have to fire that new female manager at Dad's company. She's a seductress, totally trying to hook up with Dad and wreck our family,' the baby thought.
Without hesitation, I stormed into my husband, Rick Harris's, office and let the new star recruit go on the spot.
To my surprise, she jumped ship to our biggest rival, taking several key clients with her and leaving the Harris Group in shambles.
Rick's hair was turning gray from all the stress.
Then the baby thought again, 'Money can always be earned back. But Grandma's about to get swindled out of her money and her heart by an old man.
'Eric is a total fraud, and his lies will kill Grandma.'
My mother-in-law, Jenny Harris, lost her husband in her middle age, and lately, she'd been getting way too close to a professor named Eric Woods.
I did everything I could to persuade her, and finally convinced her to break things off with Eric.
But Eric was so heartbroken and furious that he actually drank poison and ended his own life. Jenny was so consumed by guilt that she fell gravely ill.
Later, the baby thought, 'Auntie's about to hit the jackpot. The agency that wants to sign her is really going to promote her. She'll be one of the hottest stars in the country.'
Rick's sister, Haisley Harris, was already a popular influencer online, and sure enough, a talent agency wanted to sign her.
Haisley was still in college and feeling hesitant. After I convinced her, she signed with the agency and started acting. But on set, she was repeatedly assaulted by a group of men, one after another, who threatened her with nude photos they took.
She had a complete mental breakdown and ended her life by jumping off a building.
Jenny couldn't bear Haisley's tragic death and drank pesticide herself. Rick, consumed with hatred for me, demanded a divorce.
I couldn't accept any of it. In a daze, I rushed right into the street and got hit by a truck, my unborn baby and I gone in an instant.
I couldn't understand it. That baby was my own flesh and blood. Why would it ever deceive me?
When I opened my eyes again, I found myself back at the very moment I first heard my baby's thoughts.
'Mom, it's me. I'm your baby,' the baby thought. 'Dad's about to get seduced by the new female manager at his company, Julia Holmes. She's a seductress who is going to sleep her way to the top and kick us out of the house.'
As I was applying lotion, my heart clenched. I couldn't believe that I'd traveled back in time.
In my previous life, I listened to my baby's voice and kept messing up, one mistake after another. I ended up causing Haisley and Jenny's deaths, and tore Rick and me apart.
This time, I stroked my big, round belly, acted like I hadn't heard a thing, and kept calmly applying the lotion.
The baby's voice kept echoing in my mind. 'Mom, everything I'm saying is real. I'm your son. I can see what's coming, you know. I'll make sure our family stays happy. Mom, you really have to believe me.'
Just then, my phone rang. It was a video call from my mom.
She was all flustered on the other end. "Sweetie, is Rick seeing someone behind your back? I saw him with a woman today, looking really intimate, and they went into a hotel together.
"You're pregnant now, so you need to be extra careful and protect your family."
In my previous life, I didn't really buy into my baby's voice at first. It was that video call from my mom that pushed my doubts over the edge.
Then my mom hung up the video call and sent me a photo.
In the picture, a woman had her arm draped over Rick's shoulder. They were standing right outside a five-star hotel, practically glued together, looking way too cozy.
Honestly, from that photo, anyone would think Rick and Julia were way too close.
But after living through all that in my previous life, I knew deep down what was really going on.
Julia was an overseas grad, super sharp, and they were madly in love with each other.
That photo was nothing but a mix-up.
I deleted the pic my mom sent and pretended it never existed.
But three days later, trouble still found its way to the Harris Group.
Someone posted Julia's photo online, calling her a homewrecker, a femme fatale, and a temptress who used men to climb the ladder since she was a college student.
The post claimed she had zero work experience after graduation, but got hired as a manager at the Harris Group out of nowhere, and was having an affair with her boss.
The post was anonymous, and the writer kept referring to the woman as "J.H." throughout.
But the mosaic was so light that anyone could tell at a glance it was Julia.
And the whole post was written as if it came straight from a scorned wife.
It told the story of a pregnant woman whose husband barely came home anymore, supposedly lured away by an office vixen.
It painted Julia in the worst light, throwing all kinds of personal attacks and spreading sleazy rumors about her.
The post went viral overnight, and netizens went digging for dirt on Julia. She, Rick, and the Harris Group were under a lot of heat.
Julia decided to resign herself.
Rick stormed home, furious, and started yelling at me, "Iris, have you lost it? Why did you post all that nonsense online? Do you realize how hard I worked to get Julia on board?
"Our entire project is riding on her. And now you wrecked it. You destroyed a 6-million-dollar project."
I was shaking as I opened my phone, scrolling through that post over and over. "I swear, I didn't post that. Rick, please, you have to believe me. I didn't do this."
Rick gave me a cold look, something he never did. He shook his head at me, disappointment written all over his face. "Iris, when did you become so unreasonable?"
"You're causing drama and pretending you didn't do anything. You know what? Julia already checked everything. The post came straight from our home address, and the IP is tied to your phone. Julia said she's going to sue you, so wait for the court summons."
I was completely stunned.
How could that post have come from my own phone? That didn't make sense.
Could it have been my mom? She was the only one who thought Julia was a homewrecker. And she was the only one who had been to our place lately.
But my mom was in her sixties and didn't know how to use a smartphone. Besides, she just came over to drop off some homemade dishes.
This whole mess was driving me crazy, and no matter how hard I tried to investigate, I still came up empty.
