Chapter 1
Emma Sterling's gentle nature conceals unyielding resilience. From a simple background, she transforms from a soft-spoken girl into a woman of cool confidence, her inner strength proving to be her most formidable asset.
Spoiled and sharp-tongued, Chloe Linwood is vicious to the world but fiercely devoted to Emma. She hides her obsessive loyalty behind a wall of insults, secretly moving mountains for Emma while refusing to ever admit she cares.

Emma Sterling's first encounter with Chloe Linwood on campus happened on the tree-lined path during freshman move-in day.
The sun was soft that afternoon, the wind carrying fine-spun sycamore fluff that settled on her shoulders. Emma stood before the bulletin board, her fingers trembling slightly as she dragged a worn, scuffed suitcase behind her.
She came from an ordinary background, so getting into this top-tier university had been a victory won over countless sleepless nights.
She had no special admissions advantage, no powerful connections, and no safety net. Every step she took was cautious. She lived in constant terror, terrified that a single wrong move would shatter her mask and reveal the bone-deep insecurity she tried so hard to hide.
Her eyes ached from scanning the dense list of names on the board until, finally, in the very last corner, she found it.
The name looked small, almost invisible, like a stray speck of dust that had settled on the ground.
As she lowered her head, carefully tracing the information for her class schedule and dorm assignment, a voice shattered her peace. It was imperious and biting, a sound that commanded the room. "Move."
Emma flinched, instinctively shuffling to the side, and her gaze met a pair of eyes that were as stunningly beautiful as they were cold.
The girl stood before her, dressed in a limited-edition designer dress, her hair cascading in voluminous, high-gloss waves. Her look was bold and sharp, from her striking makeup down to her piercing gaze. She radiated an intimidating, unapproachable aura of wealth.
It was Chloe Linwood. She was a sharp contrast to a student like Emma, whose plain appearance made her practically invisible.
Emma had heard the name countless times before school even started. As the heiress to the Linwood family, Chloe was blessed with wealth, beauty, and intelligence. She was at the top of the social pyramid, and everyone looked up to but never dared to approach her.
What Emma couldn't understand was the undisguised hostility in Chloe's eyes. After all, they were strangers.
Chloe's gaze flicked to the name "Emma Sterling" on the board, and her brow arched. The sarcasm in her voice was a sharp knife, aimed directly at Emma's most vulnerable spot. "Emma? So you're the charity case who barely scraped by with a diversity scholarship?"
The words hit their mark, a direct blow to Emma's pride.
Her knuckles turned white as she gripped the handle of her suitcase.
She didn't argue, and she didn't dare to. Instead, she lowered her head, her voice dropping to a faint whisper that carried a barely-there tremor. "I'm sorry. I'll move."
She didn't want trouble. She especially didn't want anything to do with someone like Chloe. All she wanted was to get through college quietly and to build a stable life through her own hard work.
But Chloe wasn't finished. She took a long stride, blocking Emma's path. Chloe leaned in close, her voice dropping to a low, almost obsessively cruel whisper. "Stay away from Lucas Bennett. He's out of your league."
Lucas was the school's "it-guy." He was wealthy and handsome, with a warm, easygoing personality that made him the dream guy for countless girls. He was also the upperclassman who had, after Emma had helped him once by chance, offered to show her around campus.
Emma's head snapped up, her eyes wide with confusion and hurt. "I'm just friends with Lucas."
Chloe laughed, a sound dripping with disdain and cold amusement, as if she were looking at a pathetic, delusional insect. "Just friends?
"Stop pretending, Emma. You think no one can see what you're trying to do? If you want to use Lucas to climb the social ladder, you should first check if you're even worthy."
With a disgusted glance, as if the sight of Emma might tarnish her, Chloe turned and walked away. The hem of her dress swept the ground, leaving behind a trail of expensive, cool perfume that drew an invisible line between them.
Emma stood frozen, her palms slick with cold sweat. Humiliation, shame, and a deep-seated feeling of inadequacy washed over her, leaving her breathless.
She couldn't understand what she had done to deserve Chloe's malice. She had never tried to get close to anyone for their status, much less steal someone's crush.
All she wanted was to keep her head down and study her way toward a better future.
But from that moment on, Chloe's hostility became an invisible net, trapping her completely.
Later, Emma would learn that Lucas was Chloe's childhood friend, and the whole world saw them as the perfect couple, destined to be together. It made sense that a simple girl like her, suddenly appearing by Lucas' side, would become a thorn in Chloe's side.
But what Emma didn't know then was that Chloe's malice had never been about Lucas at all.
Chloe stopped around the corner, leaning against the cool wall as she slowly closed her eyes.
Her gaze fell on Emma's lonely, fragile figure in the distance. Her fingers curled into a fist, nails digging into her palm. The pain was a dull throb, nothing compared to the sour, agitated knot twisting in her chest.
She didn't know why she did it.
Lucas was just a friend she had grown up with. There were no romantic feelings between them.
But seeing Emma with him, witnessing the gentle way he smiled at her, felt like a needle piercing Chloe's heart, a sharp, irritating sting that left her feeling restless and angry.
She wanted to drive everyone away from Emma.
She wanted to have Emma's eyes locked onto her and her alone.
She wanted Emma to belong completely, and exclusively, to her.
This obsessive thought had taken root the first time she had seen a picture of Emma. In the photo, Emma's eyes were gentle, and her smile felt pure, like a ray of sunlight cutting through the dull, oppressive routine of Chloe's life.
She was Emma's number one fan and the obsessive protector.
She was the one watching from the shadows, tracking Emma's every move. Her devotion was a cage: no one was allowed to hurt Emma, and even more, no one was allowed to breathe Emma's air.
But Chloe couldn't say it. And she would never say it. All she could do was disguise her feelings in the clumsiest, cruelest, most foolish way possible as hostility to keep Emma trapped firmly in her life.
