The moment the words left his mouth, Ethan seemed to realize he had let too much slip, and his lips clamped tight.

I didn't spend the dead of night screaming at him.

At seven the next morning, I dialed Megan’s personal number.

"Claire? You're up early," Megan answered, accompanied by the rustle of morning paperwork.

"Megan, I'm sorry to call you so early." I tightened my grip on my lukewarm mug of coffee, my knuckles turning white. "I need to verify something. Last year… did you approach Ethan and ask if I was open to taking on a short-term project?"
