I was about to push the door open when I heard Charles. "That's right. I wanted Anna in love with me past the point of getting out, and then I wanted to drop her. The higher you lift somebody, the worse the landing.

"Love Anna? Marrying her was the better way to make her pay."

His friends started cheering him on. "Charles, you're a legend."

Maybe I had gone numb a long time before, because hearing it did nothing to me.

I pushed the door open, and the room went quiet, and somebody in the corner said, "Evening, Mrs. Lane."
