Chapter 4

The road to the coast was almost empty. I was halfway to the inn when Malcolm called.

I let it ring until the car was parked outside the dark building. Then I answered.

"You knew." His voice was rough. "You knew that day in the study. Why didn't you ask me?"

I looked up at the windows of the inn. My mother had kept a lamp burning in the front room whenever I came home late. The windows were dark now, but the keys were mine.
