Chapter 1
Scarlet Mendoza was renowned as the top investigative journalist within the werewolf community, her reputation built on exposing scandal after scandal among the packs. Many avoided holding her gaze for more than a fleeting moment, wary of the truths she might uncover. But tonight, Scarlet found herself at the center of a scandal of her own: her mate, Quentin Bell, the heir to the Bell Pack’s Alpha lineage, had been caught in an intimate moment with a rising starlet. The starlet was none other than Scarlet’s childhood friend, Ariel Hart.
Scarlet’s hand trembled as she held her camera, her focus locked on Quentin, a face she knew all too well. Through the lens, she watched as Quentin stood effortlessly—no sign of the leg injury he had claimed for years—and pulled Ariel into his embrace, his typically aloof expression softening. “Did you miss me?” he murmured, his voice low and intimate.
Ariel nestled against him, her demeanor soft and submissive, as though she were a delicate flower in need of protection. “Quentin,” she said, her voice tinged with concern, “Scarlet’s been so busy with her investigations lately. Aren’t you worried she’ll find out about us?”
Quentin chuckled, the sound dismissive and cold. “Ariel, you know I only mated her to support your career. Once you’re secure in the industry, I’ll reject her bond and make you my Luna. The Bell Pack deserves a Luna worthy of its status.”
Ariel’s eyes sparkled with admiration as she gazed up at him. “Quentin, you’ve faked a leg injury for five years, hidden your identity as the Bell Pack’s future Alpha, and lived with her just for me. You’ve sacrificed so much for our future...”
Quentin’s chest swelled with pride at her words. “A woman like Scarlet, always chasing shadows and digging up dirt, is hardly suitable for the Bell Pack. If it weren’t for her connections and the cover she provided for your career, I would never have bonded with her.”
Scarlet felt his words cut through her like a knife, leaving her shattered. The mate she had loved and cared for over the years had been deceiving her from the very start. Her mind raced back to five years ago, when she had first crossed paths with the Bell Pack. Quentin had orchestrated a car accident, pretending to save her at the cost of his mobility. From that moment, she had devoted herself to him, working tirelessly to ensure he had the best care, even when the pack healer insisted he’d never walk again.
But it had all been a lie. Quentin wasn’t injured. He wasn’t the helpless, devoted mate she had believed him to be. He was the heir to the Bell Pack, the future Alpha, and he had used her as a pawn to elevate Ariel’s career. Every word of affection, every promise of a future together, had been nothing but a calculated act. The bond they shared, the one she had cherished, was nothing more than a tool in his grand scheme.
A bitter laugh escaped Scarlet’s lips as she stood hidden in the shadows, her hands trembling uncontrollably. Love, it seemed, could be the most elaborate charade of all.
She returned to their den before they did, her mind a whirlwind of emotions. An hour later, Ariel wheeled Quentin inside, her face a mask of innocence. “Scarlet,” Quentin began, holding out a bouquet of daisies, “Ariel helped me pick these for you. Do you like them?”
Scarlet stared at the flowers, symbols of purity and loyalty, and felt the weight of their irony. She glanced at them briefly before responding, her voice steady despite the storm inside her. “I don’t care for them anymore.”
Quentin’s smile faltered, but he quickly masked it with a look of concern. “Scarlet, is something wrong?”
She met his gaze, her eyes hard and unyielding. “Nothing’s wrong, Quentin. I just realized some things aren’t worth holding onto.”
Ariel shifted uncomfortably, her eyes darting between the two. Quentin, however, seemed unfazed, his Alpha demeanor firmly in place. “Well, perhaps you’ll feel differently tomorrow,” he said, his tone dismissive.
Scarlet turned away, her heart heavy but her resolve unshaken. The bond she had once cherished was nothing more than a chain, and she was ready to break it. But not before she exposed the truth—not just for herself, but for every wolf who had ever been used and discarded by those they trusted.
