Chapter 1
My CEO boyfriend, Adam Carter, promised me he'd only grant ninety-nine wishes for his injured, amnesiac first love, Sophie Lane.
But after I silently finished counting all ninety-nine wishes, I saw him and Sophie holding each other close, lost in their feelings.
After that, I stopped clinging to Adam about taking care of his Sophie.
I asked him for a baby anklet, something to remember our soon-to-be-born child by.
When I mentioned the baby, Adam's expression softened a bit. He said, "Once I'm done with work, I'll go with you to the baby store to pick out some things."
I replied softly, "Okay."
I never told him that I had already had my lawyer draft the breakup agreement a week ago.
By then, it was already over between us.

After I was discharged from the hospital, I bumped into Adam in the hospital garden.
Sophie was nestled in his arms, the two of them murmuring softly to each other. But the moment they noticed me, Adam's smile disappeared instantly.
Adam immediately moved to shield Sophie behind him, as if he thought I might hurt her. "What are you doing here?"
His guarded stare sent a chill straight to my heart.
Sophie gently tugged Adam's sleeve. "Adam, don't scare Lily."
Before I could respond, she gave me an apologetic look. "Lily, please don't misunderstand. I'm injured, and Adam's worried about me."
Adam turned to comfort Sophie in a soft voice, but when he looked back at me, his impatience was written all over his face. "What do you want?"
I opened my mouth, hesitated, then shook my head. "Forget it, I was passing by," I said.
Adam must have sensed something was off. He stepped closer and, for once, spoke gently to me. "If there's nothing, you should head home. You're pregnant now, so take care of yourself."
Behind him, Sophie shot me a sulky glare.
I nodded. "Okay."
Adam finished speaking and started to leave with Sophie.
And now, Sophie's face was practically glowing with smugness.
I turned away, my hands unconsciously going to my belly as a surge of heartache flooded through me.
At that moment, my husband was with another woman, while the woman standing behind him, his wife, had already lost their child, and he had no idea.
If only Adam had looked back at me that day, if only he had come to my hospital room even once, he would have known it all.
I gave a bitter, self-mocking smile, and as my hand brushed against the glass bottle in my pocket, I couldn't help but grip it tight. Memories from the past came rushing back all at once.
The first and only time Adam ever went to the hospital with me, his old flame Sophie showed up. After that, he stopped coming home, barely showed up at work, and spent all his time with her.
When I begged him, eyes red from crying, to stay with me for one day, Adam told me, "Sophie's always been delicate, and now she's hurt and lost her memory. She needs me with her right now.
"Don't worry, I'm helping her get better. There's nothing else going on."
He promised me he'd only help Sophie fulfill ninety-nine wishes.
After those ninety-nine wishes, he'd come back to me for good and keep his promise to stay by my side for life.
Every time Adam granted Sophie a wish, I'd make a paper star.
Seven days ago, I had all ninety-nine stars made.
Adam granted Sophie ninety-nine wishes; so, could I trade these ninety-nine stars for one wish from him?
When I finally found Adam, hugging that jar of paper stars with all my hopes bundled inside.
He was wrapped up in Sophie's arms, the two of them holding each other close. On the table, the birthday cake sat with candles still smoking from her wish.
I overheard Adam speaking softly to her, "I'll make every wish of yours come true. No matter how many you have, I'll help you with all of them."
I couldn't remember how I ended up standing in front of them. All I cared about right then was the truth.
"What are you two doing?" My voice trembled.
Adam jerked away from Sophie the moment he heard me, panic flashing in his eyes. "Lily, what are you doing here? It's not what it looks like, we weren't—"
Before he could finish, Sophie, tears streaming down her face, quickly apologized. "Lily, please don't get the wrong idea. Adam was helping me fulfill a wish."
Adam comforted Sophie tenderly, but when he looked back at me, there was nothing but blame in his eyes.
"Sorry, I shouldn't have bothered you," I said. Before he could respond, I spoke up first and walked straight out, not glancing back.
I rushed out so fast that I didn't notice the small truck coming right at me.
I got knocked to the ground. For a second, I thought Adam would come after me. But lying there, all I saw was him frantically cradling the unconscious, crying Sophie, dialing for help.
Me? I was scooped up by a passing ambulance, like an afterthought. Adam had already personally taken Sophie to the hospital.
When I woke up, they told me the baby was gone.
There was nothing left but tears and endless sorrow.
Adam, I was letting you go. I was letting you both have each other. And I was finally letting myself go, too.
