Chapter 1
Series 1 Chapter 1
I found out my husband had a seven-year-old son with another woman three days before our fifteenth-anniversary gala.
His name was right there on the school form.
Father: Adrian Bennett.
For one second, I simply stared.
The folder had been tucked beneath Adrian's desk pad in his home office.
I had only come in to grab the final guest list for Friday night's Bennett anniversary gala—the biggest night of his career and the launch of my new collection.
Instead, I found St. Jude's Elementary printed across the top of a blue folder.
Student: Leo Cole.
Age: 7.
Mother: Vanessa Cole.
Father: Adrian Bennett.
Vanessa.
I knew that name.
Eight years ago, she had been a junior director at Bennett. Bright, eager, always hovering near Adrian at company events. She used to smile when I walked into the office and ask whether I wanted coffee.
Eight years ago was also when I had been preparing for my final round of IVF.
It was my very last chance to become a mother.
But my body was failing. I was exhausted and broken. Adrian had held me in his arms while I cried.
He wiped my tears, his own eyes red.
"Stop torturing yourself, Claire," he had whispered, kissing my forehead. "We don’t need biological kids. We can adopt later. We already have a family—just you and me. I just need you."
He was so gentle back then. He was so incredibly good to me.
I gave up my last chance to be a mother because I trusted his love. I chose to travel the world with him instead, pouring all my energy into building Bennett.
I looked down at Leo's birth date again.
My stomach turned.
And during that exact same time, while he was holding me and comforting me, he was sleeping with another woman.
While I was giving up my last attempt to have his child, Vanessa was carrying one.
And for seven years, he had come home to me knowing exactly where his son slept.
I didn't scream. The blinding pain slowly turned into a freezing, absolute clarity.
I took out my phone and snapped a clear photo of the form.
Then, I put the folder exactly where I found it, picked up my bag, and walked out.
Sitting in my car, I dialed my lawyer, Mara.
"Mara, I need every agreement connected to Bennett that carries my name."
I took a slow, cold breath.
"And audit Adrian’s finances. Start with Leo Cole."
That evening, Adrian came home just like he always did.
He walked right into the kitchen, wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, and kissed my neck. He smelled like the expensive cologne I bought him.
"Three days, baby," he whispered against my skin.
I turned to face him. "Are you ready?"
"I’m nervous."
He smiled, but I could see the tension beneath it. Friday mattered to him. Fifteen years of Bennett would be reduced to one night, one collection, one stage.
"But once Friday is over, I'm stealing you for a month." He laughed and rubbed his hands down my arms. "I’ve booked us a villa in Tuscany for a whole month. No work, no phones. Just us celebrating."
For a second, looking at him hurt more than looking at Leo's name on the form.
Because Adrian wasn't pretending.
I had known this man for fifteen years. I knew the difference between his public smile and his real one. I knew the crease beside his left eye when he was tired, the way his voice softened when he spoke only to me.
He loved me.
That was what made the school form so difficult to understand.
Somewhere inside Adrian's mind, loving his wife and hiding a seven-year-old son from her had somehow existed side by side.
"I need you beside me on that stage, Claire," he said softly.
He looked deeply into my eyes.
"Without you, none of this exists."
Fifteen years ago, those words would have sounded like love.
That night, they sounded like a fact.
"I knew." I said.
Adrian thought Friday night would be the biggest celebration of his career.
He had no idea I was preparing for it too.
