"Hit him harder!" one of the boys shouted. "Beat that bastard to death. His mother was cursed, so he must be too!"

The stones kept hitting Edwin, one after another. He never looked up.

I rushed forward and shoved the boys aside. "What are you doing?"

The moment they saw an adult, they scattered and ran.

I dropped to my knees and pulled Edwin up.

He lifted his head. There were fresh, bleeding cuts on his face where the stones had hit him. But his eyes were calm. There were no tears or anger; nothing at all.
