Chapter 3
My stomach slammed into the corner of the table, and a sharp pain shot through me.
But David didn't care. He snapped at me, "If I'd known you were this unreasonable, I never would've married you."
I leaned against the wall, trying to get up, but before I could take two steps, everything went black, and I passed out.
When I came to, I was lying on the couch, and David was sitting next to me, his face dark and stormy.
"What the hell are you doing?" he demanded as soon as he saw I was awake. "Do you even realize you made Jessica cry with your little scene just now?"
I snapped back to reality, looking at the two of them in front of me, and a wave of bitterness washed over me.
"David, Sandra just woke up. Don't talk to her like that. She only acted that way because she cares about you," Jessica said, her voice dripping with fake sweetness. I couldn't be bothered to respond.
I looked out the window at the birds flying by and let out a bitter laugh. "Let's get a divorce," I said calmly.
David furrowed his brows and snatched my hand. "Do you even know what you're saying?"
I said it again, and he stared at me, his gaze intense. "Do you really have to compete with Jessica? Don't you see how tired I am?
"Once you're divorced, what can you even do as a housewife? You're pregnant, where could you possibly go?"
I didn't say anything. Forcing myself up, I tried to head back to my room.
"Sandra," David shouted, his voice booming across the entire floor.
I stared at him in shock, the veins in his neck standing out with rage. Suddenly, he seemed like someone I barely recognized.
No matter how many times I messed up before, he never yelled at me like this. He would just touch my forehead and say, "It's okay."
But since Jessica showed up, in just a few months, all his tenderness went to her, leaving me looking like nothing but a desperate, crazy woman.
"Yes, I'm just a housewife. Completely useless.
"Isn't Jessica your perfect city woman? She's so talented, so impressive. Fine, you don't want me anymore, just let her have you, okay?
"Is that enough for you?" I shouted hysterically, using every bit of strength I had.
My meltdown drew the maid's attention. Lucy had just returned from her break, and she was the only one who knew I'd lost the baby.
She rushed over, concern written all over her face. "Mrs. Shaw, you really shouldn't let yourself get upset right now. Your health—"
"What's the big deal with her health? She's just pregnant, not some fragile princess," David cut Lucy off, glaring at me.
I looked at him calmly, a bitter smile on my lips. "Pregnant? The baby was already gone the day you left to be with Jessica for her birthday."
David hurled his glass to the floor. "Sandra, is that the best excuse you can come up with? Are you really so vicious you'd curse your own baby?
"I've tolerated all your drama before, but using the baby as an excuse? That's just too much."
Having the person I loved most doubt me so cruelly was worse than being stabbed with needles.
I used to fool myself, but now I could see it as clear as day. Whether he loved me or not, there was no pretending anymore. Losing the baby finally made me see the truth. It was time to wake up.
I forced myself to speak through the ache stabbing at my heart, quietly murmuring, "You do realize it was your own baby, right? When I called and texted you, where were you? You—"
"David, I feel so sick," Jessica cut me off mid-sentence, covering her mouth and acting like she was about to vomit.
"Jessica, what's wrong?" David rushed over, picked her up in his arms, and carried her straight to the garage. At the door, he shot me a vicious glare.
I watched his rushed back as he left, and when I caught the concern in Lucy's eyes, tears started streaming down my face.
