Chapter 6
The Bloodfang elder suddenly paused mid-sentence and took a deep sniff.
He asked, "What's that smell?"
My dad smelled it too, and his face instantly turned pale.
"Garlic," he muttered.
"What?" the elder asked.
"It's garlic!" my dad shouted.
Chaos erupted in the Nightsong Castle. The servants pinched their noses, scrambling to find where the smell was coming from.
My three brothers burst out of their rooms, all ashen-faced. My dad led the security team, tracking the stench straight to the basement door.
"Audrey!" my dad's voice thundered through the door.
It was so loud that I nearly coughed up the half scallop I'd just swallowed.
"What are you doing in there?" he shouted.
I swallowed the last bite, wiped my mouth slowly, and strolled over to the door.
"I'm just eating. Want to come in and try some?" I called out.
Things went quiet outside.
Then I heard my dad turn to the servants, his voice barely holding it together. "Get the doctor. And the Elder Council... No, get the elder!"
He paused for a moment.
"Never mind, don't call him," he sighed.
My third brother chimed in gloomily, "Dad, you should call an exorcist. I think she's possessed."
I'd created a secret passage down in the basement.
Behind the vent, there was this old, abandoned chimney. If I crawled up through it, I'd end up in the castle's backyard.
It was a totally forgotten spot, with crumbling walls, weeds everywhere, and an old kitchen with half the roof missing.
Honestly, it was like the universe handed me my own secret hideout.
I cleared out the abandoned kitchen and got it usable again.
Though there was no doors, I didn't care. Nobody ever came around at night anyway. There was no cookware, but it was not a problem.
The old butler secretly slipped me a cast-iron pan and a couple of bottles of oil. He'd never admit it, even though the bottles had the Nightsong family kitchen crest right on them.
On the fourth day, I decided to make some fried chicken.
The old butler bought five hens and a rooster for me at the market. They were living it up in the backyard weeds.
Those chickens had it better than I ever did growing up in the Nightsong Castle.
