Chapter 2
I finally accepted the truth.
Then I started digging through the memories in this body, trying to piece together how the last twenty years had gone by.
At her coming-of-age ceremony, the whole city of Everdark showed up to watch.
But when she awakened a talent that had nothing to do with the vampire bloodline, the place went dead silent. Her father locked himself in his study for a whole week.
After that, no one ever invited her to any family gatherings again.
Later, the Bloodfang family came to propose a marriage, not because they liked her, but because they wanted her status.
Her fiancé was Carlos, a B-rank vampire, a once-in-a-century genius.
The first time Carlos saw her, he just said, "This is the one?"
The girl who lived in this body before me was locked in the basement for four years. After she died, I woke up here.
I crouched in the damp basement, the musty smell in my nose, letting my mind wander.
Eventually, I stood up and spotted an unlucky rat scurrying across the corner.
As I watched it, I couldn't help but think if I could consume rat meat.
I was just kidding, of course.
What I was really thinking was that since I was stuck as a vampire who couldn't even drink blood, I would just go back to my old trade.
I decided to pick up garlic baking.
There was no sunlight down here, but there was a vent. There was no kitchen, but I would figure something out.
In the middle of the night, I was jolted awake by voices outside the door.
My third brother's voice came through, "Is that worthless thing still alive?"
The servant answered, "Same as always. Miss hasn't eaten a thing."
My third brother paused for a moment. "Just let her starve. If she dies, at least we won't have to deal with the shame."
His footsteps faded away.
I stared up at the ceiling in the dark and laughed to myself.
They wanted to starve me, but I was the head chef at a barbecue place.
Even if I was nothing but skin and bones, I could still grill up some garlic scallops.
