Daniel came home expecting a fight.

He stood in the bedroom doorway with his explanation still prepared. Claire's neighborhood was poorly lit. The storm had made driving dangerous. Leaving her at the hotel for nearly an hour would have been unreasonable.

None of it had sounded unreasonable in the car.

But Maya was asleep.

Now Maya's damp dress hung over the chair, and her shoes sat beneath it with rain dried across the toes.

She had found her own way home.

She had not waited up for him.
