Chapter 1
I was my older sister's living blood supply. My whole existence revolved around her.
She needed the freshest blood, so I was always ready, day or night.
I could not eat junk food or get sick. I had to keep myself in perfect shape, all for my sister.
Finally, on my 18th birthday, I was forced into the operating room to donate bone marrow to her.
As my mind faded, since nobody cared for me, I died right there in the hospital.
I thought that my sister and my parents could finally live happily together.
But after I died, my parents stopped loving my sister.
*****
I died on that cold operating table.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the hospital, my parents were celebrating my sister, Kyla's, successful surgery.
An hour ago, Mom who was a doctor, dragged me into the operating room, even though I was way too weak for surgery. When I begged her to stop, she just sneered at me.
She said, "Yolanda, quit faking it. It's just a bone marrow donation. Are you seriously going to die from that? You're nothing but trash, born for your sister.
"How many times do I have to tell you? You only exist because of Kyla. You owe her your life, so you'd better give it back!"
I was sobbing so hard I could barely catch my breath, shivering all over.
From the moment I came into this world, I was nothing more than Kyla's living blood supply.
As long as she needed it, it didn't matter if they drained every last drop from me.
My parents always said that if Kyla hadn't gotten sick, I wouldn't even be here. She was the reason I existed, so I owed her my life, and I was expected to pay it back.
But I could not accept that my whole existence was for someone else, and I could not even have a saying in my death.
I bit down hard on my lip, struggling desperately, my body, weak from years of blood draws, was about to give out.
"I just want to live, Mom. That's all I want," I choked out.
That wish sounded so simple, but for me, it was just wishful thinking.
I wasn't against donating bone marrow to Kyla, but with my body like this, if anything went wrong, I'd be a goner.
Mom shot the anesthesia into me with icy eyes, then dragged me onto the operating table like I was nothing but a carcass. My consciousness started slipping away, my whole body shaking with terror.
All the feelings of being wronged, all the bitterness, just flooded over me.
I could feel the cold instruments pressing against my hand. Mom looked completely serious, her hands never even shook.
She really was the best doctor in the hospital. She didn't even blink an eye when her daughter was lying there.
I closed my eyes in pain, my heart thudding heavily in my chest.
But soon, this heart would no longer be alive.
In the final moment before everything faded, there was nobody by my side. Mom had already taken the bone marrow to her beloved Kyla, leaving me alone on the operating table.
My whole body was wracked with pain. I wanted to scream for help, to cry out for Mom.
But nobody cared. Mom had taken all the medical staff with her to be with her precious Kyla. She didn't even give me a glance.
Tears slid down my face as I slowly slipped away, swallowed by endless despair.
The moment my soul slipped out of my body, I gripped my heart tightly, the pain was suffocating, absolutely unbearable.
It took several seconds for me to pull myself out of that overwhelming emotion, and I gasped for air.
Right in front of me was my own corpse, looking awful, almost unrecognizable, my eyes staring back at me, full of unwillingness.
Mom's voice echoed in my ears as my soul floated away.
She was ecstatic, shouting, "It worked!"
I had no idea when it happened, but it probably meant Kyla's surgery went well.
Kyla never did anything for me. But I ended up giving her everything, even my life.
Mom went through the motions, injecting my bone marrow into Kyla like it was just another routine, keeping an eye out for any complications.
The hours slipped by, and by evening, Kyla was already awake.
Mom hugged Kyla, crying her eyes out, cursing my name the whole time.
"My poor baby, you went through so much. Good thing that bitch Yolanda didn't screw things up. If she had, I would've drained her dry myself, useless brat," Mom spat.
She didn't give a damn if I lived or died, never even thought about me left behind in the operating room.
All she cared about was how much Kyla had suffered, and how close I came to messing up her surgery.
My nose burned with grief, and I pressed my hand over my mouth, answering her in a trembling whisper, "I'm dead, Mom. I died right there on your operating table. Does this make you happy?"
