The day after Margaret moved in, she couldn't wait to get started.

She made a tonic that was supposed to "calm the nerves and boost energy." She brought it right to my bedside.

"Hazel, come on. Drink it. This is a special formula I got from someone. It's good for you," she said.

I looked at the dark, murky liquid in the cup. I caught a faint, strange smell.
