Chapter 2
Daniel didn't get back to me for five days. Finally, I couldn't stand waiting anymore and took the initiative to text him myself.
After the Zahn Group deal was signed, things at my company calmed down a lot.
It was time to sit down and negotiate with Daniel, but before that, I stopped by the hospital first.
Daniel and I had been married for five years, and still had no kids. We went for annual checkups together.
But the results were always disappointing. The issue was with Daniel, so no matter what I did, it wouldn't make a difference.
To spare his fragile ego, I never exposed the truth, and he never mentioned it either. He'd always insist everything was fine.
My mother-in-law had always had her complaints about me, and thanks to this, I got more than my fair share of cold stares from her.
But this time, the results left me completely stunned.
To my surprise, Daniel was healthy again.
Half an hour later, I sat on a bench outside the hospital, the doctor's words echoing in my mind.
The doctor said, "Mr. Long recovered half a year ago. A month ago, he brought a young woman in for a complete pre-pregnancy screening.
"You're his assistant, right? I guess they'll be expecting some good news soon."
I felt a wave of nausea hit me.
Daniel kept his desire for a child from me, and it was never my fault that I couldn't have kids.
For five years, he let his mother throw shade at me, recovered and never bothered to tell me, simply going and finding someone else instead.
It seemed like my decision to leave him was the right one.
I crumpled up the test results, tossed them in the trash, and put on my best outfit before heading to the office.
Even from a distance, I could hear laughter coming from the office area. Someone said my name. I slowed my steps, straining my ears to listen in.
"Mr. Long really went all out for you. He took you on a trip to Darin City and even gave you that huge diamond ring. His wife never got anything like that!"
"Really? I don't know much about it. All I know is Daniel said I deserve the best, and whatever I want, he'll give it to me."
Stephanie stroked the diamond ring on her finger, a smug smile playing on her lips. Everyone around her was sucking up to her.
She must have been feeling pretty proud of herself while I was gone these past few months.
For a moment, everyone crowded around her, and nobody noticed when I walked in.
It wasn't until I stood right in front of her that Stephanie's expression instantly turned awkward and nervous.
Then, as if something clicked in her mind, she grinned. "Hey Mira, you're here. Look what Daniel gave me. Pretty, right?"
She lifted her hand, showing off that massive rock. I arched an eyebrow. "Looks good. I saw this exact style overseas. It goes for over 1 million dollars. But you owe me 500 thousand for it."
"What are you talking about?" she asked.
I snapped, "You're the mistress, spending our marital assets. The money? You need to pay it back.
"Mira, did you forget you signed a prenup? So this doesn't count as marital assets."
She flashed me a cocky smile, and I didn't deny it. "Thanks for reminding me. You're right, it's not marital assets. But…"
"But what?" Stephanie arched her brow at me. "Stop acting, Mira. Daniel said he wants nothing to do with an old woman like you. Five years of marriage and you still couldn't give him a child. He's been tired of you for ages.
"Every time he sees your wrinkles, he feels sick. I'm different. I can give him…"
Smack!
I slapped her so hard her face went red and puffy on one side.
"You might be able to give him a lot, but you'll never replace me. Go tell Daniel I'm waiting for him in the conference room. If he's not there in ten minutes, I'll leak every single client file his company has," I shot back.
If I had to go down, I'd make sure he went down with me.
Hearing what I said, Daniel's assistant scrambled to find him.
I gave Stephanie a contemptuous glare and walked straight to the conference room. Her crying and screaming filled the air behind me, but nobody bothered to pay her any attention.
I had just walked in when Daniel appeared. The moment he saw me, his face turned cold. "What do you want? Stephanie's young. It's just a diamond ring. Why are you making such a fuss about it?"
"I want nothing, Daniel. But until we're officially divorced, you'd better keep her far away from me. If she tries to parade herself in front of me again, don't blame me for making things ugly," I said coldly.
With a sharp smack, I tossed the divorce papers onto the table. "Sign them, or I'll go public. Let's see if you can survive the scandal of a top executive getting divorced."
