Chapter 8

To keep herself safe, Olivia just stayed in the hospital until the divorce papers came through. Meanwhile, Ethan was always by Vanessa's side, not even sparing Olivia a glance.

Four days later, Olivia finally got a message from the civil affairs office.

[Ms. Olivia, your marriage to Mr. Ethan has been dissolved. Please come by during business hours to pick up your divorce certificate.]

Olivia was so excited she could barely contain herself.

As she was heading downstairs to get her grandmother ready for discharge, she got another message. It was from Alexander's bodyguard, asking if Olivia was packed up and ready. He was coming to pick her up.

Olivia knew her grandmother was too frail for any more stress, so she accepted the offer without hesitation.

When Olivia went to see her grandmother, she saw nurses rushing in and out of the room, shouting anxiously, "The patient needs oxygen right now, or her life is at risk!"

Panic shot through Olivia as she rushed inside. Her grandmother lay on the bed, her face ghostly pale, barely breathing.

"What happened? Where's the ventilator?" Olivia cried out, her voice trembling with panic.

Her grandmother had surgery last month and was still weak. It was only thanks to that imported ventilator, worth a million dollars, that she'd managed to recover at all.

"Mr. Sterling took it away." one of the nurses said, her voice barely above a whisper.

That morning, two nurses were gossiping when Olivia's grandmother overheard them. Upon finding out that Ethan had bullied Olivia because of Vanessa, she was so furious that she stormed into Vanessa's hospital room and slapped her hard across the face.

Ethan stormed over, furious, and shoved Olivia's grandmother aside, warning her to show Vanessa some respect.

Olivia's grandmother was so angry that she fainted on the spot.

Just as the nurse was about to put the ventilator on Olivia's grandmother, Vanessa was suddenly gasping for air. Ethan didn't hesitate. He snatched the ventilator away and demanded the nurse use it on Vanessa instead.

The moment Olivia found out, she charged toward Vanessa's hospital room like a madwoman.

Vanessa was reclining in bed, snacking on fruit. Her face was pale, but she looked nothing like someone who actually needed a ventilator to survive.

Olivia knew Vanessa was just playing the victim in front of Ethan, all so she could get her hands on the ventilator.

But now, for her grandmother's sake, Olivia had no choice but to swallow her pride and plead in a low voice, "Miss York, please, let me have the ventilator. My grandmother needs it."

Vanessa smirked, her tone mocking. "Is that really how you beg for something?"

Olivia's fists loosened, and she fell to her knees, kowtowing deeply before Vanessa.

"Miss York, I'm begging you," Olivia pleaded.

Vanessa kicked over the trash can. "Ugh, what a mess, trash all over the floor. Olivia, if you clean it up for me, then I'll agree to your request."

Without hesitating, Olivia crawled over, grabbed a handful of trash, and shoved it into her mouth.

She fought back the urge to gag and swallowed the garbage.

"Ha! Olivia, you really are like a dog, eating whatever I tell you to," Vanessa mocked, taking pictures of Olivia looking so miserable.

"Miss York, Ethan and I are already divorced. After today, I'll be out of Northbridge, and out of your life for good," Olivia said quietly.

Olivia handed Vanessa her phone to show her the text, her voice rough from humiliation. "I swear, I won't get between you and Ethan ever again. Please, just let me have the ventilator. Look, I ate all the trash, just like you wanted."

Vanessa let out a sudden, icy laugh and, without a second thought, cut the breathing tube right in front of Olivia with a pair of scissors.

"Olivia, you're not getting the ventilator. Yeah, I made you eat trash on purpose, just to humiliate you. That old crone had the guts to slap me? I wish she'd just die already!" Vanessa spat, her voice dripping with malice.

"Vanessa!" Olivia screamed, her eyes blazing with fury.

Consumed by rage, Olivia lunged at Vanessa, her fingers digging mercilessly into Vanessa's throat as she tried to choke the life out of her.

Just as Vanessa was about to pass out, Ethan rushed in and pried Olivia off her with brute force. Olivia's forehead slammed into the sharp corner of the cabinet, and blood gushed down her face.

"Ethan, thank God you're here" Vanessa buried herself in Ethan's arms, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe. "Olivia said I made her grandmother mad, and then she barged in, wrecked the ventilator, and tried to strangle me"

Ethan's expression turned stormy when he saw the marks on Vanessa's neck.

"Olivia, wasn't breaking your leg enough of a warning for you? Your grandma slapped Vanessa first, and you still went after her?" Ethan snapped.

Olivia didn't even look at him. She was desperate, pushing the ventilator away as if nothing else mattered.

Ethan grabbed her arm and yanked the ventilator back. "Vanessa needs it too."

"Ethan, my grandmother's life depends on this!" Olivia pleaded, her voice trembling.

But no matter how much Olivia begged, Ethan wouldn't budge. To really punish her for attacking Vanessa, he had his bodyguards throw her into the morgue, telling her to think long and hard about what she'd done.

The morgue was colder and darker than anywhere else. Olivia hugged herself, huddled in the corner, her whole body trembling.

When the morgue door finally opened the next day, Olivia rushed to her grandmother's room, only to see her grandma lying there, cold and still, beneath a white sheet.

"By the time we got a ventilator from another hospital, your grandma was already gone." the nurse said softly.

"Grandma!" Olivia dropped to her knees, sobbing uncontrollably.

For the next two days, Olivia went through the motions like a zombie, getting her grandmother's death certificate, arranging the cremation, and finally burying her with her own hands.

Then, out of nowhere, Ethan called.

"I had a top-of-the-line ventilator flown in from overseas for your grandma. Tonight, cook up a few of Vanessa's favorite dishes and bring them to the hospital to apologize," Ethan ordered, his voice icy.

"Get lost!" Olivia snapped, her voice trembling with rage.

Olivia walked out of the cemetery, and the bodyguard who'd been waiting for her stepped forward.

"Miss Sanders, I'm here to take you to Cloudhaven," he said.

Olivia snapped her SIM card in half and tossed it aside, then got into the car without looking back.

She gently touched her slightly rounded belly, her gaze icy. "Ethan, I know everything. The surprise I've got for you, I hope you'll love it."
