Chapter 1
I stood frozen in the pristine bathroom of our luxury suite, staring at the unfamiliar used tampon in the trash bin. My stomach twisted into a knot as I picked up the small waste basket, examining it more closely as if it might somehow transform into something less damning. But there it was—undeniable evidence that another woman had been in our bathroom. Our honeymoon bathroom.
Brian and I had been married for three years, but work had always gotten in the way of a proper honeymoon. This cruise was supposed to be our belated celebration, a chance to reconnect. Now this.
I set the trash bin down with trembling hands and checked my watch—my father's pocket watch, the one possession I treasured above all others. We were due for dinner in thirty minutes. I took a deep breath and walked into the bedroom where Brian was adjusting his tie in the mirror.
"Brian," I said, my voice steadier than I felt, "there's a used tampon in our bathroom trash."
He continued adjusting his tie, barely glancing at me in the mirror. "And?"
"And it's not mine."
He turned then, his expression shifting from confusion to irritation in seconds. "What are you implying, Alex?"
"I'm not implying anything. I'm asking why there's another woman's tampon in our bathroom."
He sighed dramatically. "For God's sake, it's probably from housekeeping. Or maybe the previous guests. Why are you being so paranoid?"
"The suite was thoroughly cleaned before we arrived. I watched the staff finish up."
"Then housekeeping must have used our bathroom." He turned back to the mirror. "Can we drop this? We're going to be late for dinner."
The dismissal stung worse than an accusation. I swallowed the lump in my throat and retreated to finish getting ready, the knot in my stomach tightening.
---
The next evening, I couldn't sleep. Brian had claimed exhaustion after dinner and was snoring softly beside me. I slipped out of bed and onto our private balcony, hoping the night air might clear my head. That's when I noticed movement on the upper deck—a couple embracing in the moonlight.
I wouldn't have looked twice if not for the man's familiar silhouette. Brian. My Brian, who was supposed to be asleep beside me.
I grabbed my robe and made my way to the upper deck, staying in the shadows. As I got closer, I could see them clearly—Brian and his assistant Willow. She was wearing a swimsuit under a sheer cover-up that looked strangely familiar. My swimsuit. The designer one I'd packed specially for this trip.
I watched, paralyzed, as Brian tenderly touched her face, his fingers tracing her cheek in a gesture I once thought was reserved for me. When they kissed—not a furtive, guilty kiss, but a passionate, lingering one—something broke inside me. They weren't hiding. They weren't even trying to be discreet.
I retreated before they could see me, my mind racing. The tampon. The late nights at the office. The way he'd insisted Willow join us on this cruise for "business reasons." It all made sickening sense now.
---
I spent the night planning my next move. By morning, I'd composed myself enough to execute it. I found them at the poolside bar the following afternoon. Willow was lounging in a cabana, still wearing my swimsuit, now paired with oversized sunglasses and—my breath caught—the diamond bracelet Brian had given me as a wedding gift.
I approached them with ice in my veins. "That's a lovely bracelet, Willow. It looks exactly like the one my husband gave me for our wedding."
Brian choked on his drink. Willow lowered her sunglasses, her smile smug rather than embarrassed.
"Brian has excellent taste," she said, twisting her wrist so the diamonds caught the sun. "In jewelry and in women."
Several nearby passengers turned to stare. I could feel their eyes on us, sense their discomfort and curiosity.
"That's my bracelet," I said, loud enough for others to hear. "And my swimsuit. Are you wearing my underwear too?"
"Alex, keep your voice down," Brian hissed, glancing around nervously.
Willow just shrugged. "Brian gave these to me. They're mine now."
"Is that what he told you?" I laughed, a harsh sound that surprised even me. "What else has he given you that belongs to me?"
The crowd around us had grown silent, all pretense of not listening abandoned.
"You're making a scene," Brian said, standing up. "Let's discuss this privately."
"Why?" I asked, my voice rising. "You weren't concerned about privacy when you were kissing her on the deck last night. Or when you brought her into our suite to use our bathroom."
Willow stood now too, her face flushed with either anger or embarrassment—I couldn't tell which. "Brian gave me these things because he wants me to have them. Because he loves me."
"He loves what you represent—an escape from his responsibilities. But when you're no longer new and exciting, he'll discard you too." I turned to Brian. "Won't you, darling?"
