A week into our marriage, my ex showed up at my new office.

I'd been enjoying my promotion for exactly six days when Jake appeared in the lobby, demanding to see me. The receptionist called my office, her voice nervous. "There's a Jake Miller here, Mrs. Marchetti. He says he's an old friend."

I almost laughed. Old friend. That was a creative way to put it.

"Send him up," I said.
