Chapter 1
After three years of marriage, Logan Whitney, my once gentle and straight-laced CEO husband, suddenly turned into a total rebel.
He started skipping work to go ice skating, drag racing, and clubbing. He even bailed on the annual board meeting because he'd been out partying the night before.
I knew it was because Ivy Rowe, a new VP, had joined his company. She was bold, radiant, and fresh off an overseas degree.
Logan went from hating her at first to always comparing me to her, saying I was boring.
The worst was when he forced me to do doggy style on the bed and asked, "Nina, can't you go out and learn some tricks?"
I'd always been the obedient type. Studied hard, always listened to my parents, married him as they wanted, and after we tied the knot, we were polite to each other. Our life was as bland as water.
When he said that, something in my mind snapped.
"Can I really go?" I asked quietly.
Logan nodded. "Go ahead. Otherwise, you're too dull, and it's boring."
I took his words to heart and actually found myself a guy who was wild as hell.
But when Logan found out, he regretted it.
*****
When Logan told me to go out and find myself a man, I thought he was joking.
So, I asked again, my voice rough and shaky.
Logan repeated, sounding annoyed, "I'm telling you to go find a few guys and learn some tricks. All you can do is roll around in bed and moan. It's too boring."
There was a long, deep scratch on his back, already scabbed over.
I keep my nails short, so there was no way I could've made that mark.
I stared at him, dazed, trying to figure out how my once gentle, thoughtful husband, who was about thirty, had suddenly turned into a total jerk.
Before I could say anything, his phone rang. Logan didn't bother to step away. He put it on speaker right in front of me.
A sultry female voice came through, and my heart clenched.
Logan's expression shifted, going from indifferent to so excited that his penis was practically straining against his pants. "Ivy, what are you doing?"
"Guess," Ivy replied.
"Are you fucking at a host club again?"
"What do you think, Mr. Whitney? It's packed here. I'm scared. Wanna come rescue me?" Ivy laughed.
"Don't drink anymore. I'm coming over right now."
Logan jumped out of bed and threw on his clothes in a rush. He was so frantic that he forgot to zip up his pants.
I tried to stop him, but he slapped my hand away. It stung.
"What are you doing? Stop it. Ivy's a girl, and it's late. What if something happens to her? Quit being so jealous. It's annoying," Logan snapped.
I silently zipped up his pants for him. "No matter how urgent it is, you still need to make sure your fly is up. Otherwise, people will see, and it'll embarrass the Whitney family."
Logan's face contorted with annoyance. He shot me a look, then turned and left.
Before he closed the door, he muttered under his breath, "Crazy woman."
*****
This wasn't the first time Logan had talked trash to me.
Ever since his company brought in Ivy three months ago, this gorgeous, capable woman who could switch up her personality in a heartbeat, Logan had acted like he'd discovered a whole new world.
At first, he'd come home and complain at dinner about how Ivy never played by the rules and always got him into trouble.
But then he started saying how talented she was, how she could win over the toughest clients and turn them into friends.
Eventually, he got totally obsessed, barely coming home at night, always out partying with Ivy, chasing every thrill he could find.
Like me, Logan had been kept on a tight leash by his parents since he was a kid. His true nature was bottled up for twenty-eight years.
The trust-fund boys were wild, but at first Logan thought he wasn't into that scene.
But after he went to a crazy party with Ivy, he was completely addicted.
He started chasing trends off the clock, and the way he talked and acted got more and more rebellious.
I once mentioned it to Selah Whitney, Logan's mother, who lived in the old residence.
Selah told me, "Logan's been working himself to the bone for years to take over the Whitney family business. If he wants to cut loose for a while, let him.
"He'll get tired of it and come home eventually. Anyway, you're the only daughter-in-law I recognize in the Whitney family, so relax.
"What you need right now is to have a kid. That way, all the big money in the family stays with you, and you'll be the real wife, safe and sound."
I wanted to speak up, but the words stuck in my throat.
