Chapter 3
The next morning, I figured Bradley would be at work around that time, so I ordered some food, packed it in a lunch box, and headed off to the set.
Bradley was in the conference room, discussing the promotion strategy for the new show with his team. Simon, his assistant, came in and whispered in his ear. He glanced up at me, then went right back to giving instructions to his team.
It hurt. After all, I'd truly loved him for four years.
When it came to love, I couldn't stop making comparisons.
I couldn't help but think that if it were Samantha standing here instead of me, whether he would drop the meeting and run to her.
I acted like I didn't care, but inside, I was suffocating.
Just as I was about to leave, Bradley called out to me, "Hey, why rush off?"
"I didn't want to bother you," I said.
He took the lunch box from my hands and led me into his office.
"Did you make this yourself?" Bradley asked.
He leaned in for a closer look, then took a taste.
I whispered, "Yeah."
His lips curled into a gentle smile, and his eyes sparkled with amusement.
He said, "You shouldn't be doing this while you're pregnant. Let the nanny take care of it."
"I just wanted to make it myself," I said softly.
He was caught off guard for a moment, then set the box down, fetched a blanket, and gently laid it over my legs. "Just wait for me a bit. I'll be done soon."
This time, for once, he didn't break his promise. As soon as the meeting ended, he came straight to me.
However, just as he got to the door, Samantha showed up out of nowhere and stopped him. "Bradley, you said you'd watch a movie with me."
I glanced at Samantha's hand on Bradley's arm. Then I put on a brave face and said, "Bradley, Ms. Rogers just got back from overseas. She probably feels a bit lonely. Go ahead. Go with her."
Bradley looked at me, then at Samantha, looking conflicted, yet in the end, he went with Samantha.
He only said, "Rosalie, wait for me for dinner tonight." Then he let Samantha take his arm and head for the elevator.
I could never compete with Samantha, but I'd always known how things would turn out, so it didn't hurt as much now.
Bradley came home surprisingly early at night, casually carrying a bunch of red roses.
"Rosalie, I remember that red roses are your favorite," he said.
I handed the roses to the nanny and forced a smile. "You got it wrong. Ms. Rogers is the one who loves red roses. I prefer champagne roses."
He looked a bit embarrassed. "Oh, really? I promise I won't mix it up next time."
He crouched down in front of me, gently rubbing my belly. "Our wedding is just a week away. How about I give you a wedding filled with champagne roses?"
I knew that once my baby was born, I would be kicked out, and he'd be giving Samantha the big wedding instead.
A chill ran through me at this thought. Using the food as an excuse, I gently pushed him away. "I made some soup. It's almost ready."
He watched me leave, his eyes brimming with affection, and for a moment, it made me forget all about Samantha. I almost believed this warm little scene was really our life together.
Tomorrow was the wedding. These past few days, Bradley never left me, and I kept fooling myself into thinking he truly loved me.
He went into the bathroom and forgot to close his laptop this morning, leaving the WhatsApp page staring me in the face.
Samantha's message was pinned to the top, and I couldn't help but look at it again and again.
Just a few short messages were enough to shatter my heart.
He was meeting up with Samantha tonight.
Just thinking about what they might do tonight made me sick.
It was like Bradley was feeling guilty. He was extra gentle with me all day. Even when I brought up the first time we met, his face lit up with a warm smile.
Before I knew it, I blurted out, "Do you remember the first time we met? You said even the hookers were better than me."
Suddenly, he leaned in, his lips aiming for mine. I hurriedly pushed him away.
Bradley said softly, "I was too naive back then. Rosalie, I'm sorry. I promise it won't happen again. Will you forgive me?"
I could hear the catch in his voice, but I knew guys like him could fake it in a heartbeat. He begged me to forgive him now, then he would throw himself at another woman later.
How could I ever believe a word he said?
