When Claire opened her eyes again, she found herself in the hospital. The doctor told her she was lucky. They managed to save her legs in time, so no amputation was needed, but she might never stand up again.

Looking at her legs encased in plaster, Claire couldn't help but let out a bitter laugh. Her sister was gone, and she was nearly disabled herself. Was this what they call lucky?

Claire checked her phone, feeling drained. There were over 99 unread messages, and the one pinned at the top was from a colleague she was close with.
