On the third day of my husband's business trip, he post an Instagram sotry. The photo showed a tiny, wrinkled hand gripping an adult's finger. The caption was just one line. "Nine pounds, one ounce. It's a boy. Welcome to the world, son." I froze for two seconds. I read every single one of Eric's posts. I thought he was in Silvercrest closing a deal. He said he'd be swamped all week and barely even called. I was about to drop a comment saying "Whose baby is this?" when I saw the comments. The first one was from his coworker, Kevin Lewis. [Congrats, Eric! Tell your wife she's a champ!] Tell your wife she's a champ? I sat on the living room couch, holding a cup of freshly brewed chocolate, staring at that line. I wasn't pregnant. I hadn't given birth to anyone's baby. Just last month, I'd gone in for a preconception checkup, and the doctor said everything looked fine and I was good to start trying. Eric said we'd start trying by the end of the year, once he wrapped up this project. I went back and read that post one more time. I tapped into it and checked the audience. He had it set to Close Friends only. The fact that I could see it meant he'd accidentally added me to his Close Friends list. Or he simply forgot to take me off.
