Chapter 1

At thirty-five weeks pregnant, on Christmas Eve, I doubled over beside my shopping cart when another contraction tightened across my stomach.

My husband said he was still at work and told me to ask my mother to take me to the hospital.

Forty minutes later, my stepdaughter sent me a photo.

He was at a restaurant eight blocks from the hospital, helping his ex-wife move their seats together on an upcoming Christmas flight.

At that moment, the monitor beside me was timing contractions seven minutes apart.

His only reply to me was, "Let me know what they say after they examine you."

That evening at eight, I had been standing in the checkout line with the last of our Christmas groceries when a hard tightening suddenly spread across my belly.

The baby had barely moved all afternoon, and the tightening began coming one wave after another.

I called the labor and delivery triage line first.

After hearing my symptoms, the nurse told me to go to the hospital immediately.

If no one was with me, I needed to call 911.

Bracing one hand against the shopping cart, I called Daniel.

"Come get me now."

"I'm having regular contractions, and the baby hasn't been moving normally."

I heard silverware clinking on his end of the line.

He paused for two seconds before lowering his voice.

"I'm still at the office in a meeting."

"Ask your mother to take you."

"I'll come as soon as I'm done."

"You promised you'd be home by seven."

"Plans changed at the last minute."

Impatience crept into his voice.

"Emma, the important thing is getting you to the hospital."

"Your mother lives closer."

"Stop wasting time arguing with me."

I did not ask another question.

I called my mother instead.

Fifteen minutes later, she arrived and drove me to the labor and delivery triage unit at St. Anne's Medical Center.

A nurse connected me to a fetal monitor.

My contractions were already seven minutes apart, and my blood pressure came back high three times in a row.

Mom pulled my slipping blanket back over me, then sent Daniel a message.

"The doctor says she may be in preterm labor."

"Come now."

He did not answer.

Twenty minutes later, all I received was, "Let me know what they say after they examine you."

The nurse asked, "Is the baby's father on his way?"

I stared at his message.

"Something came up."

"My mother is here with me."

That was when my stepdaughter, Sophie, sent me a photo.

She was twenty-two, Daniel's daughter with his ex-wife, Kate.

In two days, she would be leaving for a Christmas trip to New York with her father.

In the photo, Sophie sat in the middle of a restaurant booth.

Daniel and Kate were on either side of her, with hotel listings and an airline seat map spread across the table.

Sophie had written, "Thank you for letting Dad come help us finalize the Christmas trip."

"I'm so happy Mom gets to come too."

"Dad said you weren't feeling well tonight."

"Are you okay?"

I called Daniel back immediately.

He declined the first call.

He answered the second.

"When did your office move into a restaurant?"

Silence held for several seconds.

"There was a problem with the flight, and Sophie was panicking."

"I didn't mention Kate because I knew you'd read too much into it."

"You kept saying this Christmas trip was only for you and Sophie."

"The plans changed."

"Sophie wants to take this Christmas trip with both her parents there."

"That isn't an unreasonable thing to want."

His voice turned cold.

"The doctor won't let you fly anyway."

"What would telling you have changed, except making you upset?"

"At the very least, I would have known your ex-wife was now part of the trip."

"It is a trip for Sophie."

"Stop assuming the worst."

He sounded as if he had prepared every answer in advance.

"Emma, focus on taking care of yourself."

"You shouldn't be lying in a hospital bed trying to investigate me."

The call ended.

A few seconds later, Sophie forwarded me the latest itinerary.

"Dad said you already knew Mom was coming."

"Since you're the best at catching travel details, could you look it over one more time and make sure we didn't miss anything?"

I opened the attachment.

Only three names appeared anywhere on the itinerary: Daniel, Kate, and Sophie.

Seattle to New York.

Three seats on the outbound flight and three on the return.

Six seats in all.

Daniel and Kate were beside each other.

Sophie had the window seat in the same row.

The hotel confirmation was attached below it.

A two-bedroom family suite, again reserved for the three of them.

After the divorce, Kate had lived in Europe.

For years, she and Daniel communicated only through emails about Sophie and phone calls on holidays.

Then Kate moved back to Seattle three years ago, and the boundaries began to shift, little by little.

Halfway through our anniversary dinner, Kate called to say her apartment was leaking.

Daniel grabbed his coat and left.

He did not return until two in the morning.

The first year she was back, Daniel would finish Thanksgiving dinner with me, then take a plate of food to Kate because she was alone in Seattle.

Easter was the same.

He always waited until we had finished dinner before leaving.

He said Kate had no other family nearby, and each time, I chose to understand.

By the second year, he started leaving before dessert.

Last year, he spent all of Thanksgiving and Sophie's birthday at Kate's house.

He came home late at night and said Sophie wanted a little more time with both her parents.

By the time I understood what had happened, I was the one spending every important family occasion alone.

We had waited five years for this baby.

The day the pregnancy test showed two lines, Daniel held me and promised he would not miss a single important moment.

I thought the pregnancy might finally remind him where the boundaries belonged.

But at my appointment last month, he left the exam room to answer Kate's call and did not come back before it ended.

During our childbirth class, he sat beside me but spent forty minutes texting her.

The reason was always Sophie.

Even on a night when I might be in preterm labor, he had gone to Kate first.

The doctor said the baby was stable for the moment, but I needed to stay for observation.

Mom asked whether we should keep waiting for Daniel.

"No."

I found a family-law attorney online who offered after-hours consultations.

When she answered, she asked what I needed help with.

"A divorce."

I saved the six-seat Christmas itinerary with my hospital records.

"Prepare the separation papers."

"I want to be gone before he boards that plane."
