At the hospital, the nurse asked if I was allergic to any anesthesia.

Just as I was about to answer, Michael's irritated voice came from beside me.

He said, "Sarah, why are you getting anesthesia? What if something happens to the baby? Could you handle that?"

The words of explanation caught in my throat. I couldn't say a word.

Yeah, like he would ever remember.

He couldn't even remember how my mom died, so how would he know that I lost my baby that Christmas night?

I turned to the nurse and said, "No anesthesia."
