Chapter 2
Then, blinking her puppy-dog eyes full of tears, Leia stared at Damon with a pitiful look.
I couldn't help but think to myself, 'Wow, she's got some serious acting skills.'
Seeing her pitiful puppy eyes, Damon immediately tried to comfort her. "No way, Leia. Check this out."
He opened his palm, revealing a car key.
Leia's eyes lit up instantly. "The newest sports car? Damon, you're so good to me."
Damon gave her a fond smile. "Of course. You're the only sister I've got."
'Only sister? What a joke.' I was speechless, but Leia was still stirring up drama.
Leia said in a timid voice, "Noelle, your outfit is gorgeous. I've never owned anything this pretty before."
I asked, "Leia, do you want it?"
Leia lowered her gaze, looking all meek. "No, I couldn't possibly take something of yours."
So I played dumb and just laid it all out. "That car is worth over a million, while my clothes, even the priciest ones, are barely a hundred grand.
"Damon clearly spoils you more, doesn't he? Leia, what could you possibly be dissatisfied with? Or do you think he's still not treating you well enough?"
Leia quickly explained, "No, that's not it. The car and the clothes are both Damon's way of showing he cares.
"I'd never put a price on them. It's just he never picked out clothes for me before.
"If you want the car, Noelle, I can totally give it to you."
Leia kept her head down, giving Damon that sad puppy look.
"Well, if that's the case," I said, reaching out and grabbing the car key before Damon could say a word. "Guess I'll just accept it, then."
Mom happened to walk in right then, her face full of displeasure. "Noelle, you're the older sister. How could you just take something from your little sister?"
I feigned surprise. "Leia was the one who wanted to give it to me."
Mom glanced at Leia, who was already sniffling, and her voice took on a stern edge. "Jane, I know you just got back and maybe don't understand how things work around here yet, but that doesn't mean you get to be selfish with your sister."
"Selfish?" I shot back, putting on my most innocent face. "But this stuff was mine to begin with!"
"You..." Mom started to say something, but Dad cut her off.
"Jane's got a point," Dad said. "We've really let you down all these years. It's about time we did something to make it up to you.
"Leia, you don't really need another car. Just let Jane have this one."
He put down his newspaper and led me out. "While I've got some free time today, let's get you signed up for driving school."
"Thanks, Dad!" I replied with a grin.
Then Dad and I headed out together.
Mom let out a sigh as we left. "She's going to be spoiled rotten sooner or later."
With that, she headed upstairs.
Damon leaned in to comfort Leia. "Don't be mad at Dad, Leia. Next time, I'll get you an even better car."
Leia put on her sweetest face and nodded. "Don't worry, Damon. I won't be mad at Dad or Noelle."
But even as she said that, the gloom in her eyes only deepened.
Leia was basically brought in as my stand-in. She's a year younger, but her birthday falls just one day before mine.
To celebrate my return, the Anderson family set up a birthday bash for me.
But even though it was supposed to be my party, they actually held it on her birthday instead.
Back in my previous life, Leia set me up and locked me in the bathroom, making sure I'd miss the party entirely.
Because of that, the Anderson family thought I got all worked up over the birthday drama and was too petty to be taken seriously. So, they handed over all the company shares that were meant for me to Leia instead.
