Chapter 4
Tess felt a lump in her throat. She reached for her bag, but as she lifted the flap, she saw something Liam hadn't put there. Tucked into the side pocket was a small, high-tech GPS tag, the size of a coin.
She didn't have to guess who put it there. Julian didn't hide his tracks anymore; he left them like breadcrumbs, daring her to follow them into the woods.
The campus was a blur of noise, but today, the noise felt orchestrated. As Tess walked toward the library, she spotted Noah sitting on a stone wall. He wasn't doing homework. He was just sitting, his large frame relaxed, his eyes scanning the crowd. When his gaze landed on Tess, he gave a short, solemn nod.
He wasn't following her, but he was there.
"Tess! Wait up!"
She turned to see Cora jogging toward her, her blonde ponytail swinging. Cora looked breathless and genuinely happy. "I was hoping I’d catch you. Melissa and I are going to the student union for acai bowls before our noon lecture. You have to come. Julian said you’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed, so we’re officially initiating you into the group."
Julian said.
"I really should study, Cora," Tess said, trying to keep her voice steady.
"Oh, come on. Julian is meeting us there anyway," Cora said, linking her arm through Tess’s. "He’s so worried about you, it’s actually kind of adorable. He kept texting Jayden last night asking if we thought you had a good time at the fire."
Tess felt the "Gilded Cage" closing in. Julian wasn't just monitoring her; he was using his friends to create a perimeter of "kindness" that she couldn't break without looking like a monster. If she pushed Cora away, she was the "rude sister." If she complained, she was "ungrateful."
By the time they reached the union, the whole group was there. Jayden was animatedly recounting a story about a frat party, while Melissa looked over a spreadsheet on her laptop. And in the center of it all sat Julian.
He looked different today. He wore a crisp white button-down with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the heavy watch on his wrist. He looked every bit the successful, reformed heir their parents wanted him to be.
"There she is," Jayden cheered. "The guest of honor."
Julian stood up, pulling out the chair next to him. "You’re late, Tess. I was starting to think you got lost."
"I took the long way," she said, sliding into the seat.
Julian’s hand landed on the back of her chair, his fingers brushing against her shoulder. It was a casual gesture to anyone watching, but to Tess, it felt like a brand. "The long way is dangerous," he whispered, leaning in so only she could hear. "People get lost in the gaps, Tess. I prefer it when I know exactly where you are."
"I found a tracker in my bag, Julian," she hissed under the cover of Jayden’s loud laughter.
Julian didn't blink. He picked up his water bottle and took a slow, deliberate sip. "The campus has had security issues lately. I’m just looking out for my family. Melissa, tell Tess about the formal next month."
The conversation shifted seamlessly. For the next hour, Tess sat in a daze as the four friends planned her social life. They talked about dress codes, after-parties, and weekend trips. To the world, they were the "it" group of Northwood University. To Tess, they were the walls of a prison cell she hadn't realized was being built around her for years.
"I can't do this, Liam," Tess said an hour later, huddled in the corner of a quiet stairwell in the Fine Arts building.
"He’s using them," Liam’s voice crackled through the phone. He sounded frantic. "He’s using his friends as buffers so you can't get to me and I can't get to you. I tried to come to the union, but Noah 'accidentally' ran into me and started asking a dozen questions about my theater tech project. He wouldn't let me pass, Tess. It wasn't a coincidence."
"He’s smart," Tess whispered, tears stinging her eyes. "He knows I won't cause a scene in front of Cora or Melissa. He knows I want to be 'normal'."
"Listen to me," Liam said, his voice dropping. "I’m at the library. I found something. Julian’s records from that academy... they aren't just 'behavioral'. My cousin works in the admin office at the school Julian went to. There was a report, Tess. A report about a girl."
Tess’s heart stopped. "What girl?"
"Her name was Elena. She was a faculty daughter. She vanished for forty-eight hours, and when they found her, she was in an old shed on the edge of campus. She wasn't hurt, but she was... terrified. She wouldn't say who took her. But the next day, Julian was expelled and sent to the high-security wing."
A cold dread washed over Tess. She remembered the letters Julian had sent her from that school—letters filled with descriptions of how much he missed the "quiet" of their home.
"Tess? You still there?"
"I have to go," she whispered. "He’s coming."
She hung up just as the heavy fire door at the top of the stairs creaked open.
Julian stood at the top of the landing. The light from the hallway hit him from behind, turning him into a dark silhouette. He didn't say a word. He just started walking down the stairs, his footsteps echoing in the narrow space.
"You're not supposed to be in this building," Julian said. His voice was flat, devoid of the "gentle" tone he used in front of Melissa and the others.
"I have a class here," Tess lied, backing into the corner.
"No, you don't. Your next class is in the Science Hall. It starts in ten minutes." He stopped two steps above her, looming over her. "Who were you talking to, Tess? Was it Liam? Was he telling you stories again?"
"He’s my friend, Julian. Unlike your 'friends', who are just people you manipulate into doing your dirty work."
Julian’s eyes flashed with a sudden, violent intensity. He reached out and grabbed her chin, forcing her to look at him. His grip wasn't painful, but it was absolute.
"My friends believe in me," he growled. "They see the man I’ve worked so hard to become. They see the protector. The only person who sees the 'monster' is you, Tess. And that’s because you’re the only one who knows how much the monster loves you."
"That’s not love. It's a sickness."
Julian leaned in, his lips inches from hers. The "Hardin" energy was suffocating now, a mix of desperate need and crushing control. "Call it whatever you want. But look at you. Your heart is racing. Your skin is flushed. You hate me, but you’re more alive in this stairwell with me than you’ve ever been with that boy Caleb or your little shadow, Liam."
He let go of her chin and stepped back, his face smoothing over into that chillingly handsome mask.
"I'm driving you to your next class. Noah is waiting outside to make sure Liam doesn't 'accidentally' interrupt your studies again."
"You can't keep me forever, Julian."
Julian opened the door for her, gesturing for her to lead the way. As she passed him, he leaned down and whispered, "I don't have to keep you forever, Tess. I just have to keep you until you realize that there’s nowhere else to go."
As they walked out into the bright afternoon sun, Tess saw Noah standing by the curb, leaning against Julian’s SUV. He looked up and gave her that same, silent nod.
The glass perimeter was complete. She was surrounded by beauty, by friends, and by a love that felt like a slow-motion drowning. And as Julian opened the car door for her, she realized that Liam’s discovery about "Elena" wasn't a warning for the past.
It was a blueprint for her future.
