Chapter 1

The air in the back of the black SUV felt expensive, like leather, cedarwood, and a suffocating silence.

Tess stared out the window at the passing campus of Northwood University. It was supposed to be her fresh start. Three years of peace, three years of thinking the "misunderstanding" that had fractured their family was buried in a military academy six states away.

Then her stepfather had announced the "wonderful news" over breakfast: “Julian has been such a changed man, we’ve decided he’ll finish his degree at the same school as Tess. He can look out for her.”

Beside her, Julian shifted. He didn’t say anything. He didn't have to. The mere heat of his presence was a physical weight. He was leaning back, one arm draped over the middle console, his long fingers drumming a slow, rhythmic beat that felt like a countdown.

"You're shaking, Tess," he said. His voice was low, a velvet rasp that made the hair on her arms stand up.

"It’s the AC," she lied, her voice thin.

Julian turned his head. His jaw was sharper than she remembered, his eyes darker, more predatory shade of blue. He looked like the boy who used to watch her from the hallway, but refined, polished, and infinitely more dangerous.

"I told you," he whispered, leaning in until she could smell the rain on his coat. "I’m a changed man. You have nothing to fear from your brother."

The way he said brother was a slur—a mockery of the title they shared on paper but never in their blood.

The campus green was an explosion of color and noise, the typical chaos of move-in week. Tess felt a surge of relief when she spotted a bleached-blonde hair near the fountain.

"Liam!" she called out, practically stumbling out of the car before it had fully stopped.

Liam turned, his face lighting up. He caught her in a massive hug, spinning her once. "There’s my favorite girl! I thought you’d been kidnapped by the Ivy League elite."

As he pulled back, Liam’s eyes traveled to the SUV. His smile didn't falter, but his posture stiffened. Julian had stepped out of the car. He stood there, leaning against the door, the late afternoon sun catching the perfect lines of his face. He looked like a god carved from ice.

Tess felt Liam’s hand twitch on her shoulder. She knew that look. It was the look every person on campus would give Julian—a mix of awe and attraction. Even Liam, who knew the stories, who knew why Tess’s hands shook, couldn't help the slight widening of his eyes.

"So," Liam muttered, his voice dropping an octave, "the legend returns. I hate to say it, Tess, but the military academy did him... favors."

"Don't," Tess pleaded. "He’s a nightmare in a designer suit."

"A very, very hot nightmare," Liam whispered, before straightening up as Julian approached.

"Liam, right?" Julian said, stopping just a foot away. He didn't offer a hand. He didn't smile. He just stood there, towering over them, projecting a dominance that made the crowded quad feel empty.

"In the flesh," Liam said, trying for his usual bravado. "Glad to see you're back, Julian. Tess has been... well, she’s been doing great without you."

Julian’s gaze flicked to Liam’s hand, which was still resting on Tess’s arm. The temperature seemed to drop. Julian didn't look at Liam's face; he looked at the contact point as if it were a stain he needed to bleach.

"I’m sure she has," Julian said smoothly. "But the vacation is over. I'm here now."

"Julian! Over here!"

A group of four was lounging on the stone steps of the library, looking like a curated advertisement for the university's "Elite" tier.

Melissa stood up first, her high-waisted trousers and silk blouse fluttering. She moved toward them with a practiced grace, followed by Cora, who looked like a porcelain doll with a soft, deceptive smile. Behind them, Jayden and Noah were mid-laugh, looking like the kind of guys who won every game they played.

"We thought you were going to be late," Melissa said, sliding her arm through Julian’s with a familiar ease. She looked at Tess and Liam, her eyes scanning them with the speed of a high-end processor. "And you must be the little sister. Tess, right? Julian hasn't stopped talking about making sure your move-in went perfectly."

"Step-sister," Julian corrected instantly, his eyes never leaving Tess.

"Right, right," Jayden chimed in, stepping forward to give Julian a fist-bump. "Family first. I’m Jayden. This is Noah—he’s the muscle. Cora is the brains, and Melissa... well, Melissa runs the world."

Noah nodded at Tess, his expression quiet and observant. Cora stepped forward and took Tess’s hand. "We’re so glad you’re here, Tess. Julian said you might be a little overwhelmed by the transition. We’re going to make sure you have the best time."

Tess felt the trap closing. These people weren't mean; they were nice. They were charming, beautiful, and completely convinced that Julian was the hero of the story.

"We're actually headed to the dining hall," Liam said, sensing Tess’s panic. "Big plans. Lots of... non-family things to do."

Julian’s expression didn't change, but he stepped closer to Tess, cutting off the space between her and Liam. He reached out, his hand hovering over her neck before his fingers brushed a stray hair behind her ear. The touch was light, but Tess felt like she’d been branded.

"You go on, Liam," Julian said, his voice dropping into that dangerous, gentle register. "Tess is going to have dinner with us. My parents want me to keep her close, and I’d hate to disappoint them on my first day back."

"Julian, I already told Liam—" Tess started.

Julian’s hand moved from her hair to the back of her neck, his thumb resting right against the pulse point of her throat. He could feel her heart racing. He leaned down, his breath warm against her skin, his voice a whisper that only she could hear.

"Don't make a scene, Tess. Not in front of my friends. You know how I get when people don't play their parts."

He pulled back, his face a mask of perfect, brotherly concern. "Right, Tess? You’d rather stay with us."

Tess looked at Liam. She saw the flash of anger in Liam’s eyes, but she also saw the way his gaze lingered for a split second on Julian’s lips, on the sharp cut of his shoulders. Even her best friend was compromised by the gravity Julian pulled everyone into.

"Go ahead, Liam," Tess said, her voice trembling. "I'll... I'll catch up with you later."

Liam hesitated, his eyes darting between Julian’s cold stare and Tess’s pale face. "Text me," he said firmly. "Every hour. I mean it."

As Liam walked away, Julian’s grip on the back of her neck tightened—just a fraction. Just enough to let her know he was never letting go.

"He's a vivid one, isn't he?" Melissa laughed, oblivious. "He seems a little protective of you, Tess."

"He's just a friend," Julian said, his voice like a closing door. "And Tess doesn't need protection from anyone but herself."

He turned her toward the library, his hand still firmly on her neck, guiding her into the circle of his friends. As they walked, Julian leaned in one last time.

"Second chances are rare, Tess," he whispered. "Don't waste yours trying to run. I’ve spent three years learning how to catch you."

Tess looked up at the towering columns of the university, realizing that the "fresh start" she’d prayed for was just a bigger cage, and Julian held all the keys.
